Off the start a group of four, headed for th e first two laps by Cadalora, mad e a br eak from the pack. On th e third, Carlos Cardus took over briefly before fading wit h tire woes. "I guess I finally have to admi t wh at th e problem was, " Ca rdus sai d. " I didn' t wa nt to em barra ss Dunlop. T his is the seco nd race in a row when th e' front a nd rea r tires a re not round. I don 't u nd erstand why it ha p pens o n my H onda and no t the Apri lias. After a few la ps, th e bike wou ld judder o ff the apex." Cardus h u ng nea r the front fo r severa l la ps wh ile first Biagg i, th en Chi li too k tu rn s lead in g. Reggian i was making up for a bad start, mo ving into seventh on th e eigh th lap a nd two spo ts bett er on th e nint h wh en Bradl took the lead. . " When I join ed th e front grou p I was a bit tir ed a nd I decided to wait for the last lap before a ttacki ng," Reggian i said. Halfway in a nd Bradl was leading Chili, Reg g ia n i th ird in fro nt o f Cad a lora, Biaggi fift h, on the ra gged edge, a nd Lucky Strike Suzu ki's Wileo Zeelenberg sixth. For the next si x laps , th e order sh ifted consta nt ly, Regg iani into th e lead o n th e 13th , th en Cad al ora o n the 17th , befor e Biaggi went in front for the seco nd time. Cardus had dropped o ff the pace as had Zeelenberg, and Bradl was fadi ng in fifth . H e a nd Zeelen berg wo uld co nte st th e spot just behind the leading quartet until th e 20th la p wh en Brad l took it for good. " It was rea lly in credibl e how 1 was towed from fift h to first pl ace in o ne go, " Brad l sai d abou t hi s brief ten ur e a t th e front. " After that I tried to go away, bu t my fears ca me tru e; there . was j ust no wa y. I was ha p p y to stay with th e leaders when 1 had a big slide over the front wh eel. 1 lost the slip str eam and it just was no t possible to ca tch the leaders again , beca use th ey were towi ng each o the r a way from me." Bradl added th at he was sligh tly wea kened by the flu, but sho uld be in to p form for Ba rcelon a. Zeelen berg fin ished beh ind Brad l, a certain sixth until Chi li cras hed o n the final lap . " I was fig h ti ng to go on the podiu m wh en Biaggi to uch ed me ," C hi li expla ined. " I lost the front and fell off. Sad ly, for me, it was th e end o f th e race." Third p lace finisher Biaggi wasn 't sure it was he who caused th e crash. " O ne lap to the finish I had a big hi gh -side wh en 1 lost th e front a nd I th ink th is was th e tim e in whi ch Chi li cras hed. I di d n 't see a nyt hing," Biaggi sai d , adding it was the first time he'd raced with th e race leaders. , wa nt to do it more often . 1 understand th at it was a lso a p roblem in my m ind , but now 1 kn ow th a t 1 ca n do it." Biaggi ha d led th e 18th and 19th laps, Reggia n i taking over for 20 a nd 21 befor e Cadalo ra dr afted past go ing into the first turn. " O ne o f th e most diff icult parts o f the race was being involved with so man y o th er rid ers because it becom es im possible to see th e racing line.
