We went down to the race wit h a grou p of II peo p le from Las Vegas, six of wh om had never seen a Camel Pro race before. I have been attending dirt track events since th e fifties. Everyo ne th ought th e races were great and we ga ined some new fans who later were reall y di sappointed at the actio ns of a few riders and fans. After the bar closed at th e hotel where some of the top riders were staying, they took their party upstairs to a coup le of rooms right across from th e roo ms we were staying in. With the number of peo ple on hand, they ended up in th e hallway, and were using bad language, marking th e wallpaper, putting shaving cream on th e walls, urinating in th e ashtrays at the elevators - all with no considerat io n for the ot her 'guests in th e nearby roo ms. I know th a t in a sport such as racing, there is a need for celebra ting and relaxi ng after an event, bu t not at the expe nse of ot hers . Most have probably never heard .of Gary Collard; some might hav e. He was an early day flat tracker, racing ou t of po cket on old tracks in northern Cal ifornia suc h as 3 Sta r and West Capitol. H e raced as an amateur but ra n with and sometimes beat the best, lik e Dick Mann , Ph il Ray and J im Sai ton e. In his later years, he spent muc h of his ti me sliding his thumper o n th e dirt roads of th e Mendocino Nat ional For est. Gar y wasn 't fast in the ro ug h stu ff and usually tired by day's en d, bu t given a favorite section of dirt road, he could smoke th e best. H e was untouchabl e in certain places suc h as "The Rock p il e," F ren ch Ridge, Bartlett Springs Road and his favori te, Modoc Ridge. Gary lived for motorcycling but cancer finally conquered him. Several years ago when Gar y had hi s first brain tumor o pera tio n , his doctors said that he wouldn 't be abl e to swing his leg over th e seat of even a bicycle for at least six months. One month to the day of th at operatio n, during whi ch an orange-sized tumor was removed from hi s head ,.Gary and I were up at " T he Good Country," as he called it, . sliding do wn tho se dirt roads, bumping handlebars just like we had in the past. He was not quite up to speed, but hi s cancer didn't slow him up much. It took over five brain tumors to fin ally get him. We've lost a real specia l on e.
