Aaron Croney topped the B class wit h a 24-po int ride. B class winners included Brya n Mars ha ll (200cc). Wayne Hatch (250cc), David Moser (O pe n ), David Rob inson (Fo ur-Stro ke). Brad Irwin (Senio r) , J oe Ferrante (Super Sen io r), Jim Weitz (Vetera n) , and Debbie Kane (Wo m en ). Kane's 73-point ride was all the mo re a mazing since it was accomp lished o n a Kawasaki KX80 Big Wh eel. The course dropped riders fro m the Mace Mill Staging Area down to Rock Cree k, an d the n up and around a 1500-foot climb of Bald Mountain to checkpoint one at the II-mile mark by Dirt y Picture Trail. Unlike last year wh en th ere was a chec k-in, riders goi ng in to the fir st section hot were rewarded the risk ta king. How ever, there were three o ther chec kins alo ng the course to catc h riders who tho ugh t they co uld get away wi th riding hot all day. O nly six riders were able to zero ch eck one , while the rest of the fast guys took o ne o r two points a t the checkpoin t. There was a gas stop ava ilable at th e end of check o ne, and rid ers were enco uraged to top' off their tanks for the 40 p lu s gr ound. mile circu it that wou ld incl ude th e Ballarat Trailr Slat e Mo untain, Cros ier Loop and Sailor Ravi ne. Wit hin this circu it were checks two, three, four and five.' Che ck two was a check-i n to Ballarat, and th en it was roc k and ro ll tim e. Everybody lost po ints through th e ci rcu it, with most po in ts being ta ken at check four , which was at the end of the Crosier Loop. The fast guys lost a r.oin t or two at ch eck five at the end of Sai lor Ravine, and th en coas ted in to the main gas sto p at mil e 63. Resets were provided after each chec k to get riders back on time. Due to the hot and dry wea ther, CERA went th rough 30 ga llo ns of dr inking wa ter for the rider s at the gas sto p. After th e gas st0l' was the maj or speci al test for the day , tha t -includ ed a 17· m ile stre tch th ro ugh th e H orseshoe T ra il, a nd around the ot her side of ' Bald Mo un tain. Riders were ch ecked in to the sectio n a t check six and the n wen t fo r it. Na tura lly, a few r ide rs go t overex ubera n t a nd burn ed ch eck six. Riders lost th e most po ints of th e da y at check seven . and carried the points to chec k eil:ht. There was a short stra igh taway go ing In to check seven , a nd checkpoint captain Rick Ada n decided to slow th e riders down wi th some na tural obstacles. There was a long reset at the end of check eig ht tha t allo wed most rid ers to get back o n ti me. and cru ise to th e Finish line at check nine. Speed s were kept down going into th e fin ish . since the last sections of trail were close to th e camp ing area . Vet Mart Twiggs top ped th e C cla ss with a 34-po int ride. Othe r C class winners incl uded John Lee (20Occ). Robb Thompson (250cc), Nick Steele (O pe n ), Bill y J ones (Fo urStro ke) . David Bow en (Sen io r) and J oe Sta ncato (Super Sen ior ). Each of the class winners were awar ded a $150 Image ja cket don at ed by Fox Racin g. T hree KTM ra cinl'; jer seys were provided by KTM America, whi le over 100 bottles of Wat er Pumper premix and related lu bricants were do na ted by Duralube. Over 200 rid ers were greeted with a ra ce co urse fea tu rin g multiple double jumps, step -ups and tableto p jumps. Car lis le established h is do mi nance early in the evening by posting a wire-to-wire victory in th e ope ning 125cc Pro mot a . Car lisle ap pea red to have the track wi red and com mented th at he had rid den th e tra ck Wednesday during th e n ight pra ctic e sessio n two da ys pr ior to the event. Eriksson was seco nd a t the start of the hot and d usty event but soo n took th e lead. Halfway through th e first lap Eriks son go t tangled in a vin e and Chad Busenbark took the lead. Busen bark led for a la p and a half until Eriksson wor ked his way aro und and gass ed it to th e end. Chris Ca p lin ger had a P."" r sta rt in the du st and doggedl y wor ked hiis way u p thro ug h the pack. Caplinger passed Busen bark wh en he tangl ed wi th a lapped ridei on the fifth lap and th en set his sigh ts for Eriksson. Sassaman grabbed the lea d from Majeski, Ken Coolbeth , Rob ert Ada ms and Kenny Dah lin at th e start. Alth ough Sassa man and Maj eski pulled some di sta nce o n the o the rs, the order stayed th e sam e until the seventh lap , whe n Maj eski slipped under him as they went down the curv ing back stra igh t. A few seconds la ter, Adams caught a ru t in th e third turn, and dr opped to six th place by the tim e he recovered . All th e Sen iors exited the second tum ahea d of th e 750s, with J ohn Winsett lead ing Luke Zechman, J oe Heberling and Steve Wilson, whil e Jody Yearick led his father, Earl , and Bill All en in the 750cc battle. H eberling muscled into second by the end of th e o pe n m g lap, while he and Wilson bo th got by Winsett for fir st and second o n the fourth lap. Winsett bobbled sligh tly "oing into th e third turn o n th e second lap, giving Conklin first B riders honors. Winsett retook the spot the next lap, and a few laps la ter Conklin tapped Winsett's rear ti re and dropped three spots. With Winsett half a lap beh ind, Lync h had over 10 yards over Bastian, but fell in the final turn and ~ve Bastian th e win.
