Carsten cranks at Bridgehampton MX By Jim and Carolyn Simpson - 28 BRIDGEHAMPTON, NY, MAY2 Barry Carsten cra nked out fo ur mo ta wins to cla im the 125 an d 250cc Pro class overa ll titles a t the in au gu ral Long Island Mot o Chall en ge at Bridgehamp to n Mo tor Sports Par k. In th e first 250cc Pro mOlO,Carsten , aboard hi s Montgom eryville Cycle/DG and MSRsponsored Suzuki, chased Jerry Seip through tu rn o ne and into th e woods. As the pair charged ou t o [ th e u p hill Carsten was pressuri ng Seip [or th e lead. Midway th rou gh la p o ne Car sten mot ored ahea d into th e lead , while J alil Lynch was engaged in a hea ted battle [or third with J ason Riv as. Ri vas found his way ao und Lynch and Seip gave away secon d when he cras hed . Rivas took o ver · seco nd but co u ld n ' t mat ch th e speed o [ Car sten , who was all alone in first and took th e mo ta win. Rivas scored second and Lynch was th ird. Rivas grabbed the holeshot a t th e start o[ mo to two , but Carsten took over firs t before the o pen ing la\,' had ended. Seip moved up to cha llenge RIvas, but L ynch was als o o n the ga s and passe d both Seip and Rivas 10 take over in seco nd. T im O lson led th e openi ng lap of the fir st 125cc Novice moto and was pursued by Andrew Reynolds , Ra y Bowers and H olcomb. Olson began to p u t time o n both Reynolds and Bowers who were engaged in a handlebarto-handl ebar duel for second. By th e start of th e fourth lap Bowers moved int o seco nd, while Reynol ds was left on the grou nd, resu lting in H o lcomb cl im bing into th ird. Bower s was no mat ch for H olcomb , as he blazed past and set sai l [or th e lead er Ol son . Holcomb reeled in O lson and was beginning to appl y press ure , wh en he ran into th e back of O lson an d fell . Olson went o n to win, whi le Holcomb picked himself off the ground to secu re second in front of Bow ers and Reynolds. Holcomb sto le the lead at th e start of the seco nd mo to and never looked back. Olson spent much of th e mota working u p fro m a so-so start a nd even tua lly fin ished second after a grea t la te-race battle with Bowers. Thomas pulled the hol eshot in th e first moto, followed by T im Stokes a nd Don Curts. Thomas co ntro lled the lead [or two laps before Stok es was able to power past him. Stokes went on to sco re th e win over Thomas who was followed by John Kiley, Er ic Lee ton and Guy San tu cci. , In moto two , Kiley sto le the lead off the line wi th Thomas, Keith Jones and Leeton in pursuit. Thomas took over th e top spo t o n th e second lap.
