A crowd of 6985 spectators wat ched as Davis, the 1990 Mo tor cycle Asphalt Racing Series (MARS) Champion, sped past ea rly race leader Ru st y Rogers, the defending series cha m p, o n lap seven of the 20-lap main to earn over 2500 of the $10,000 purse. The race marked a couple of firsts . For the firs t time since the series' introduction in 1990, the event carr ied an AMA sanction. In additio n, Charlotte MOlOr Speedway, mos tly used for stock car racing, has inves ted $1.6 million in a state-of-the -art lighting system, and the MARS event was the first-ever race run under th e new ligh ts. . The sho rt track ut ili zes a port ion of the m ile a nd o ne-ha lf ova l's front straigh tawa y wit h the remainder of th e sma ll ova l track located on the grass area between th e stra ig h t and th e p it road. The new lighting system illumin ates th e ent ire supers peedway track and will mak e its stock car racing debut in the near fu ture wi th the runnin g of "The Win ston ." • A field of 32 Juniors and Experts were to pped in tim e trials by T exas W Davis hopes to regai n the Motorcycle Asphalt Ra cing Series Ch am pionship in 1992. Davis (21) passed Rust y Rogers (1) o n lap seven and fin ish ed the race uncontested. 24 Harl ey-David son 's Larry Pegram , who turned in a 17.53 seco nd lap, a tick faster th an Davis' 17.61. Eric Graybeal, Robert Lew is and Kris Kiser rounded o ut th e fastest five qual if iers and earned spots in the Hoo ters' Kin g of the H ill Sh oot o ut, a series of three-lap das hes that pitted the fifth and fourt hfastest qualifiers ag ainst each o ther, then th e winner aga ins t the thirdfastest, and so on. Graybeal topped Lewi s, then Kiser, befor e los in g to Davis. Davis an d Pegram faced off in a five-lap sprint that saw Pegram win and receive the 250 winner's chec k and th e attention of the Hooters G irls for th e remaind er of the n ight. Po le-sitters Pegram , Davis, Kiser and Graybeal easi ly won their. heat race wins , whi le Steve Burkholder topped the fift h and las t hea t race. Pegram and Davis turned in the two-fastest heat race times, so the second- place finis hers in thei r heats, Rogers and Brian T illson, were a lso a wa rde d direct tran sfers to the main event . Three sem is tha t each offered two transfer spot s provided the remaining main even t sta rte rs. T erry Poovey pas sed Les Washbon and ran away with the win in th e first semi, wh ile Washbon contin ued to lose ground and surre ndered second to Ch arl ie Orr.
