The state's financiallytroubled Catastroph ic Loss Ben efits Continuation Fund is intende d to provide financial assistance to victims of acci de nts in vo lving uninsured motorists by attach ing additional surcharges to traf£ic tickets. Wh ile motorcyclists were forced to p ay into the fu nd wi th eac h ticket, they were barred from collecting any financia l aid , even if involved in an accide nt caused by an uninsured motorist. T he . AMA, working with Charles Umbenhauer an d Bru ce Johnson, of ABATE of Pen nsylvania, successfully lobbi ed the Pen n sylva n ia Legislature and Govern or Robert P. Casey to pass HB1549, whi ch exemp ts motorcyclists fro m pa ying the surcharge. The N ebraska legislature has passed a new law that will gen erate about $33,500 per year for the state's Motorcycle Safe t y P r ogram . The law raises motorcycle registrati on fees by $ 1.50, and $3 per registration will be credi ted to the safety fund, double the previo us amount pe r regi stration tha t went to th e fund. T he law was signed by Gov. B en Nelson on April 17, an d becom es effective on October I. Models who are featured in the calendars will be on hand to autograph their pies in the ' new datekeepers whi ch will be on sale at the show. An open-to- thepublic motorcycle contest will be held with judging in two categories, custom Harleys and high per formance/race bikes. The price of admission is $5, which includes entry to the Museum of Flying, and the show will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m . At a April 27 press conference in Paris, France, defending Camel Supercross, 250 and 500cc National Champion J ean-Michel Bay le anno unced that he has sign ed with the Rothma ns Honda team to contest the 1993 World Ch ampionship 250cc Road Race Series. Bayle plans to make his pavement debut at th is year's Fren ch 250cc Grand Prix on Jul y 19 on a Hond a RS250. Nat ion al Dirt Track Referee Duke Olliges was released by the AMA on April 24. "We j ust weren 't on the same page," said AMA Na tional Dirt Track Manager Mike Kidd. " Duke wasn 't very recep tive to the changes th at I felt were needed to better the sport, and I felt that it was time for a change tim e to bring in someone new ." O lliges served as th e National dirt tra ck starter in 1968, and began his term as referee in 1970. " I have no ill feelings, if Kidd says that we didn 't see eye-to-eye, then that's the best way to end it," said Ol liges. "I've been reti red for years (from th e rail road indu stry), an d I cont in ued to serve as referee becau se I love the sport.
