Second place went to Bartels' Nigel Gale, who in turn had opened up a lead on the Suburba n Mo tors Harl ey of Rich ard Koehl er. The Wisconsin traveling partner of Zampach , however, was later disqualified by the AMA and third place was ha nd ed to Lancaster Harl ey-D avid son 's Ran d y T ext er. T he win moved Zampach to within 12 points of Ga le in the cha mpionshi p point standings, 52-40, with Chuck Blackm on, fourth today, th ird in the sta ndings with 32 points . Zampach nailed th e holesh ot as the I I-lap race got underway, but two laps later th e Moron ey's Cycl e-b acked H arl ey of J am es Lesli e went by in the ch icane. Gale retali ated by passin g both Leslie and Zampach go ing into turn one o n the same lap . On lap four, th ough, Zampach recaptured the lead and the race for all practical purposes was over. T he Wisconsin rid er pulled away to an easy victory, hi s second of the season. Gal e's race also becam e som ewhat easier wh en Leslie cras hed in turn three. Koehler, meanwhile, was also a lo ne in third pl ace. 'bu t it would be for naught wh en he was later disqu alified fbr engine ill egalities. If the hi stor y of AMA racing is LO be placed in a time capsu le for some future bein gs to reflect upon, th ey sho u ld co nsider leavin g this one out. Only 15 riders started the race , and none of th ose 15 had any hope of staying with Picotte. Wh en th e 18 la p s wer e fi na lly com pleted, th e French Canadian had W 12 bea ten Gi aC aM o to 's J im my Ada mo by a n estima ted five seco nds , but it really wasn 't tha t close. At o ne point, Pi cotte led by as much as 13 seco nds befor e backin g it do wn and coastin g to the wi n in th e red-flag interrupted race. Adam o and Picotte were midpac k but q uickly moved int o second and third on the NASCAR banking. Picotte too k over the lead for the first tim e on the second lap and instantl y opened up a two-second lead. Wh enever h e felt lik e i t, the Fren ch Canadian could gain as mu ch as a second and a half through th e in field a lone. On the fourt h lap , the red flag came o ut when Pete J ohnson cras hed in the ch icane. T he Pennsylvania rider su ffered a broken pelvis in the accident , and clean-u p crews went abo u t repairing the hay- bale stre wn chicane. Adamo was thankfu l for th e race stoppage as the o n/off switch on h is Ducat i fai led. He was able to push the bike back to the pi ts and make th e restart. _ "T han k God it was only th e switch ," Adamo said la ter. The restart was almost a repea t of th e first sta rt, with Mathews agai n gett ing the jump. Picott e wasted li ttl e tim e in taking th e lead and aga in pulling away fro m the depleted field.
