And j udgi ng from his rid in g, he deserved it. Pressured throughout by Moroney's Cycles' Jam es Leslie, even briefly losin g the lead at one point. Zampach took the checkers after Leslie nearly crashed while in pursuit on the last of 12 laps. He got back up to speed and finished second, 2.139 seconds back. Nigel Gale finished a close third on the Bartels' H-D. Zampach averaged 76.846 mph for the 25-mile race which he completed in 20 minutes, 44.626 seconds. T wo rounds into the championship, Gale ho lds the points lead wit h 35, ni ne better than Ronal d McGill, fifth today beh ind dirt-tracker Mike Hale on another Bartels' mount. Zampach took th e lead on the second lap with the lead trio splitting. The order was Zampach, Leslie, Gale for most of the race, excep t o n the fourth lap when Lesli e took the lead between turns two and three. Zampach took it back going inside th e right-hand turn four and sped to the flag. Leslie 's hopes for a last lap cha rge went awry as he slid going out of turn two, his left leg flying off the mach in e. T he gap from Zam pach to Les lie was abo ut 10 bike lengths, Gale another 10 back in third, bu t well a head of Hale who'd stuffed his way past McGill in turn II at .the end of the seventh lap. " O nce I got used to the track I found it much easier to use the power," Stroud said. " It's a five-speed, but I o n ly go t into fourth , going up the h ill , short -shifting at about 9,500 rp m.
