ESP N's cameras will document the q uest of H arl ey-Davidson factory rider Scott Park er to becom e the first five-time champion in the 39-year history of the prestigiou s series. The first televised race of th e season will be the May 17 San J ose Mile, round four of the 17-event Camel Pro Series, originating from the San ta Clara County Fairgrounds in San J ose, California. The race will air on July 9/ 10, and will be one of six mil e dirt track even ts (both Springfield rou nds, the Sunday Syracuse round, Fresn o and Sacramento, in addition to San J ose) in cluded in the broadcast package. Also i n th e pa ckage will be three events from half-mile tracks (Mineral Wells, Oklahoma City and Pomona) plus the Peo ria TT. Produced for the AMA by Dave Despain & Associates, the ESPN broadcasts will air in prime time on Thursday even ings in the Pacific tim e zone (early Friday morning in the East ). The first five programs will air at 9:30 p.m. (Pacific time) on consecutive T hursday evenings from July 9 through August 6. A second block of five consecu tive broadcasts, from October I through October 26, will air 30 minutes la ter. Returnin g for th e secon d year as the presenting sponsor of the broadcasts is Harley-Davidson. On the heels of a successful debut season in 1991 , the American Motorcycle Institute (AMI) of Dayton a Beach , Florida, is ano ther returning spo nsor. Manning the ESP N microphones for the series , which will air under the network 's Speed Worl d ba nner, will be host Dave Despain and pit reporter Larry Maiers. Expert commentary will be provided by th e sport's winningest mech anic, Bill Werner. Current program p lanning calls for ESPN 's popular MotoWorld program, hosted by Despain, to air immediately after th e AMA Camel Pro Series shows. In addition to an no uncing its 1992 Camel Pro Seri es p rogramming package, AMA has reached agreement with Dave Despain & Associates to negotiate an expa nded dirt track broadcast package for 1993. AMA's objective is to obtain broader coverage of maj or 1993 events and also to provide exposure for its 600 National Series and Junior Nat ion al Series. " O ur Camel Pro even ts on ESPN were received en thusiastica lly in 1991 , and our 1992 series of 10 races will further serve our many fans," com mented AMA Vice President Dick Maxwell. " We're also excited by the opportunity to expose our spo rt to the wide audience provided by ESPN , and to afford a con tinuing opportuni ty for broad er consumer reach to spo nsors such as H arl ey-Davidson and AMI. " For years, AMA dirt track racing was one of the best-kept secrets in mo torsports,' Maxwell continued. " With the cont inu ity of our broad casts on ESP N, and an aggressive push for 1993 that is already well under way, we' re going to share tha t secret." wic k. But there's a bigger issue at stake here : safety. Responsible riders know just obeying the law isn't enough. They wear helmets, eye protection and protective clothing. They have a proper moto rcycle license, read their owner's manuals, and none of them would even think of riding under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Nobody wants to pay a speeding ticket.
