recorded the best scores in th e two-loop
event held in th e mou ntains near
Barcelona.
Ahvala, from Finland, fin ished th e
day- long ride, consisti ng of two laps
th ro ugh 20 sectio ns, six points ahead
of Italian Diego Bosis. Ahvala had a
th ree-point lead at th e end of th e first
loop, and also had th e best score in
the second loop by five points. The
factory Aprilia pi lo t's winning margin
was reduced as he was also assessed an
additiona l five po ints for taki ng too
much tim e to comp lete th e tri al s.
Of the 48 wh o started th e event , 39
fini shed and only eight ri ders avo ided
finish ing late. Many riders considered
th e long course to be very demanding,
as the mountainous terrain had the
competitors climbin g rock y hillsides,
nego tia ting a quarry and fo rd ing
streams.
Defending World Champion J ordi
Tarres, ridi ng - under the scrutiny of
thousands of adoring home fans , could
o n ly manage a third overall fin ish on
h is factory Beta. The Spaniard was
six th a t the comp letio n of the first loop
but hi s seco nd-best score in loop two
pro pelled him to hi s final finish ing
positio n.
Tarres nearl y crashe d o nce and
collected a quick maximum score of
five in o ne sectio n, then later in the
first loop he spu n hi s Beta Zero on a
nasty rock step cli mb and bounced it
into the woods.
Ahva la o nly recorded two scores of

1992 Mickey Thompson Off- Road
Grand Prix Series.
" I go t a good start and sta yed out
front to win . The win felt good in front
of th e Dallas crowd," said Craig.
The fir st heat rac e saw Dennis
Hawthorne and Ro y Schellenberger
use their front row starts to move in to
th e lead o n the fir st lap. ' Lowell
Thompson passed Sch ellenberger for
second and as lap three started, mo ved
past Hawthorne for .th e lead. Brooks
and Cra ig started towards the back of
the pack, but by th e third lap they were

all in the top three, Lance Smail and
Hawthorne foll owing. At the finish
it was Thompson in th e number one
spot with Broo ks in the run ne r-up
spot. Crai g ro u nded out the top three.

H eat two's front-ro w sta rte rs were
J ason Krempin and J ason Edwards.
Ed wards passed Krempin for the lead
o n lap two a nd proceeded to lea d for
th e next several laps, whi le Kyle
Lewi s sta lked hi s every move. The
last two laps sa w Lewi s double th e
last two jumps o n th e back stra ig ht
to set up what would be th e upcom in g lead cha nge.

Shawn Rober ti won a ll five classes th at he
entered a t the Oregon Motorcycl e Roa d
Ra cin g Association's firs t mee t of 1992. held
a t Po nJ and Imemational Race way.
The weath er was all too normal for early
Apri l and most races were run on a wet track ,
b UI Rob er ti seemed 10 have the traction
prob lem closely figured. Man y ot hers never
di d solve it and a lot of races were decided
by cras hes a t th e fron t of th e pad , especially
so for Robert Wright, who cras hed while
lead ing O pen Superbike a nd O pen Productio ,:, classes, making Roberti 's task all the
easier.
Wri ght did score the wi n in 750cc Su per bi ke
class against a stro ng field of local rid ers , and
put in his best ride of th e da y in 750cc
Production class, comi ng (rom dead last on
th e sta rt ing gri d to fin ish a distant second
beh ind Roberti.
Kevin Norm et a lso PUI in a strong showing
in the wet. winnin g the 450cc Production and
450cc Superbike classes. The Production win
was earned by a last lap, la st 10m pas s in
heavy tra ffic,
Another last lap pass for a win was put
o n by Cl iH Bak er tn th e Ultra lig ht Superbike
class.
" Dwa in Trurnmert had j umped to a big
lead , but th en he slo wed down a bit, We were
all mixed up with bi kes from o ther classes
and I ma na ged to sneak up on him . Ni pped
him right at th e nag," Baker said.
"The best two- ma n race of the day may have
been be tween Rober ti and Canadian Jason
Scraba in th e 600cc Superbike class . There
were severa l lead changes, and a close finish ,
bUI Rober ti was in fro nt when it counted.
