Despite a p ain full y sore foot, J eff Russell finished second overall. ki' s Kurt H ough were separa ted -by 12 seconds for third and fourth overall, respe cti vel y. " I rode as good as I thought I could rid e," said Hough. " And th ere were still four of us tied for fir st with sixes , a nd only .three points separating the top 10. Wh en riding conditions are th is go od it's a roll of the dice for the win. I've been riding hare scrambles la tely but enduros are so much more fun. I had so much fun today I couldn 't stand myself." Hornestate rider J eff Fredette plugged aw ay ab oard his Kawasa ki KDX200 and broke ' the seven -po int barrier for fifth overall. " It was su ch a ni ce da y - the tractio n was perfect and th e creek crossings were low," said Fredette. "There was nothing to ca u se anymajor problems, so a lot o f peop le ended up wi th the same scores. . "All of the sections were good. They wer e all marked good and everyth ing was rideable. The longest section was righ t before the first ga s stop at about 40 m iles," added Freddette. "I dr opped two points through there, and I think most of th e others d id the same. So mehow, I dropped one m ore than th e ot hers in the las t section." Michigan 's Alan Randt a lso dropped seven points, but lost out at th e eme rgen cy checks to Fredette and finished sixth overall. " I ro de o kay," said Randt, " but I made some errors th a t reflected in my score. I could've done better. I was r iding o n minu te 26 a nd R a n d y H awkins (riding on m inute 27) caught me in th e fir st long sectio n. Ri ght after he got past, I, o f cou rse, picked up the pace and we ended up riding tog ether a nd get ting in eac h o ther's way, al most knocking each o the r down a co u ple of times. But I enjoyed it, " Form er National Enduro Ch ampion ' Kevin H in es th u m ped a Husqvarna W/ XE 350cc fou r-stroke to seventh overa ll with a score o f eight. " It was rea lly easy wh en you compare it with so me of the runs we've had here," sai d H ines. "Th is is the first time I' ve rid den m y 350 in al most ideal conditions, and I was happy th a t we were so close with the suspension. I th ink we have it dialed in now. "Riding th e four-stroke, of cour se, is different than the two-stroke I used to ride," sai d Hines, " And one of the things is keeping the power on lo nger. It requires a d ifferen t technique because you don't have that almost in sta nt revving like th e two-strokes. I'm still letting off too quickly, but I'm getting bett er. This is a very co m petitive machine a nd I have a chance to win it all this year; " KTM 's Allen Gravit picked up eighth overall after being erroneously posted in 16th . . J an H rehor (mi ddle) was in contention for the overall win until he dropped and drowned out his bike in this stream crossing. Da vid Cripe (shown) was the High Point B ri der, while Larry Sullivan was the High Point A finisher. " I had a pretty good day . I fell off a co up le of times. I was sightseeing instead o f payin g a ttentio n to th e run," said Gravit. "I dropped eight, I had an okay day, but I could've done a li ttl e better." Kawasa ki 's Larry Roeseler dropped nine points a nd fin ish ed ninth overall. " We had great conditions and I rea lly wa nted to do good, but it was just o ne of those days for me ," said Roese1er. " I wrapped up some barbed wire somewhere in the second section a nd then I ended up o n th e wro ng side of a fence and had to back-tra ck. That co st me abo ut th ree points. I dr opped nine while the rest of th e guys dropped six." High Point A rider and II th overa ll was Kawas aki KX250-mounted Larry Sullivan. " I don't ride many enduros and I do n' t kn o w if that score of 10 is going to be good enough to win," said Sull ivan immediately after crossing the finish line. "I didn't have any Three-tim e Nati onal Endu ro C hampio n R a n dy Hawkins h as wo n the fi rst tw o N atio n als o f the year. problems; I was rid i ng o n the sa me mi n ute as Hines, so th at took care o f a ll the ti m e-k eeping prob lems. The only p ro bl em I had was keeping Kevin in sight. Mo st o f th e time I co u ld stay w ith hi m , b ut i t depended on what kind of woods we had. Some times he wou ld disap pear almost instantly bu t we wou ld get back on ti me and ride together aga in. It was a thrill and a learning experience j ust to ride with him. He is so fast and so smooth ." CN Results 0 / A: I. Ra nd y H awk in s (Suz). HI-PT A: I. Larry Su llivan (Kaw). HI-PT B: I. Davi d Cripe (KT M). AA: I. Ran dy Hawk ins (SUl ); 2.
