pointed at getting rid o f dirt tra ck. That co u ld n ' t be further from the truth. T here are going to have to be some big cha nges. Everythi ng with dirt track racing is the same as it was several yea rs a go. It 's expensive, it 's difficult a nd it 's a unique bi ke. Again , if you want to relate it to something, relate it to motocross. A kid goes into th e sto re a nd lays down his $3000 or $4000 an d 'wa lks ou t th e door with as good as mo tocr osser as h e ca n get. H e's got all kinds o f accessories for it; h e's go t four manufacturers vying for him. If yo u go into dirt track , yo u 've go t o ne choice, rea lly . If you' re going to run th e tw ins you run a H arley. If ' yo u 're going to run th e singles yo u run so m ebo dy 's fr am e w i th a R ota x engin e. T here's no op port u n ity for co ntinge ncy sponsors and th ing s lik e tha t. It 's kind o f a spec -b ike class without bein g o ne. So we' re lookin g a t ways to go o ut and broaden its base a little bi t. We wa nt to get ot h er peo pl e invol ved in it, other manufactu rers, co n tingenc y peop le. . If yo u tak e a look a t dirt trac k, it 's as healthy as ca n be 'a t th e top. It 's a beautiful h ouse sitt ing o n a rotten fou n da tio n. So we'r e looking at ways to try a nd bui ld u p th e foundation. We're looking at a five-year p lan. Looking at it historically, it seems as though the o the r manufacturers have bee n run out of dir t tra ck ra cing. It 's bec ome, for th e m ost part, a HarleyDavidson ser ies. Is th at so me th in g th e AMA wo u ld lik e to see change? We wo u ld lik e to see more manufactu rers involved. That's why we'o pene d up th e singles to tw o-strokes this year - to ge t more manufacturer involvement. The only manufacturer that's rea ll y taken a p as s a t th e Grand Na tio na l cla ss was H onda, yea rs ago . And they wa lked a way- from it. After they were restricted to the p oint where they co u ldn't wi n anym ore. T ha t co u ld have been. I wasn't th ere. Th er e a re a cou p le o f th em st i ll running o u t th er e that a re fairl y co mpetitive. T here is still g ru m bli ng from d irt trackers th at their en try fees were bum p ed up in order to help finance the TV p ac kage. Is th at st ill true? Right now we haven' t been able to come up with en o ugh people to come in with en ough money to make the T V dea l wo rk . If the y want television , then everybody has to contribute a little bit. We can build this thing up and make it a better televi sion package, and th e day will come when they probably won 't have to do that. Others tha t ha ve h eld yo u r position, or similar p osi tions, in the p ast h ave rea lly left you wi th a h ole to dig yo urself o u t of. Your predecessor was cri tized for not mak ing an effort wi th motocross and dirt track racing, for spendi ng a ll hi s ti me with road racing. Are yo u go ing to try and familiarize yo urself with as m an y differen t as pects of motorcycle racing as you can? Sure. You ca n o n ly go to so many races. The las t dirt track race I'd been to pri or to Sacrame nto last yea r was when I was in hi gh school in Peoria. That was a long time ago. I don' t reall y h ave any id ea what's going o n. It 's a heck o f a show, I kn ow th at. I will be going to a little bit of everyth ing. T here is a lo ng history of animosity within the dirt tra ck community. Between th e dirt track communi ty and th e AMA . There' s a feeling that if the AMA sa id the su n came up in th e ea st, th e dirt track co m m u n ity would say no it doesn 't, it co mes up in th e west. Or th e o ther way around.
