a fallen tree. Hough ran into him and
kn ocked Conner over th e log. Then
ano ther first -tim e visitor at Loret ta
Lynn 's, Team Suzuki 's Steve H atch ,
mad e a mistake of his o wn.
"I saw Conner skid with everyo ne
right on h im , so I tri ed to hit a tree
root and tabletop my way over th e
log," sa id Hat ch , a form er motocrosser
wh o now competes aboa rd a modified
Suzuki RMX2S0. " Unfor tuna tely I,
sp un on the log too an d ended up
shooting down o ver th e hill in to a tree.
1 bent everyth ing up prett y good but
at least Duane was ni ce enough to yell
down and see if 1 was o kay."
Hatch got back into the race but
co uld o nly manage to make it ba ck up
into 12th pl ace by th e finish .
The pileup ga ve Summers room to
get aw ay from everyone early and by
th e time he made i t into the barrels
he held a first lap lead of 30 seconds
o n Keegan, Hough held third o n his
Kaw a saki KX2S0 wi th Pl essinger ,
H awk in s, Ed Lojak , and Husaberg SOl
ri der Eriksson follow in g.
By the end of the second lap Pl essinge r, H awkins and Roeseler had each
ma de some progress through the field.
"I ca lmed down and just started to
crui se a little," said Plessinger. " Kurt
(H oug h ) let me by whe n 1 go t up
beh ind him and then Rand y (H awkins) did the same thing."
Hawkins' bid for a first-ever GNCC
win was soo n to be dash ed by an old
injury, " A vin e caug h t my fork or
some thi ng and jerked the bars right
o u t of my hands," exp lained th e 2Syear-old South Carolinian . " It popped
my sho ulder out and I fell down th e
h ill. Fortunat el y so me o the r rider
sto pped and helped ge t the bike off me,
, 'ca u se 1 was la ying unde r it a nd
co uld n ' t have done it with o ne arm.
After that I had to q uit and save myself
for th e enduro series, where it all rea lly
coun ts for me."
Hawkins adm itt ed that he recently
sto p ped wearin g a sho ulder brace but
wa s going home to dig it o u t of hi s
ga rage.
Roeseler worked hi s way up into
sixth after two laps and was abo u t 40
seco nds off of Summers ' lead in g pace.
How ever, a slick move out on th e tra il
had severa l fans cheeri ng him o n o ut
in th e woods. Roeseler found a line
tha t all owed h im to leap over a fall en
tree tha t was elevated abo u t five feet
abo ve th e ground. By preloading hi s
bike off of a mound of dirt he could
leap the obstacle and save the five
secon ds it took to go aro u nd the log.
By th e end of the race severa l riders
were using the hot and legal line.
Team Green 's T erry Cunningham,
the National Hare Scramb les Seri es
runner-up in '9 1, suff ered an uncharact eristica lly bad start but managed
to race up into third pl ace after th ree
laps. But just befor e the halfway po int
Cunnin gh am banged hi s head on the
grou nd whe n he fell in a fast section
and p ulled out a short time later.
As th e trai l began to wear down,
Su m me rs began paddin g h is lead in
what he would lat er ca ll "a £lawless
race ." Hi s lead grew to two m inutes
after four laps, nearl y three m inutes
aft er five, and ended up mor e than
six minutes o n the seventh and fin al
lap.
" My mechanic Fred Bram blett ha s
rea lly been getting o n me abo u t not
starting out strong enough in these
races," said Summers befor e popping
the cork on a champagne bottle in th e
winner's circle. " I tried to ride this race
like a motocross, from the first tum
to the last. 1 didn 't have a single
