Krause's l6-minute ride was a minute better than .an y of th e other scores, even with a twominute bum. K 20 "I'm tr ying to get go ing for the ISDE qualifiers and accomplish ne w goals," sai d th e desert ace Krau se. " I had a rea l clea n ride and tha t's a good start. tI In second pl ace for the secon d time in a row was H on da XR600-mounted Fullmer. Gett ing used to the bridesmaid position, Fullmer said, " I had Pa ul Krause 's dad , Robert, was a frontrunner in the Super Senior class. a good ride , but I Just have to wai t for the next one (enduro)." Back on th e trail was Iunseeker Grant Pal enske, who turned in a smooth ride for third overa ll with 18 p o i n ts d ropped . Honda 's Chu ck Mill er , wh o wa s timekeeping o ff Pal en sk e, grabbed fourth over all. Rou nd in g out the top five overall was T eam Green' s newest member Jimmy Lewis, who scored th e 250cc class victory. The cour se in itially led the competito rs through the wh oop-filled valley at Sea r le's St a ti on a n d wa n de re d around Char lie's Place. Most of the top ride rs managed to zero the entire first loop, yet the speeds were too fast for any " normal" rider to timekeep in . This pu t a strain on the B and C class riders tha t too k lots of po in ts and more energy ou t of them. Encountering problems in the first loop was Lewis. " Someone ran into th e back of me as I was tria ls riding into a check. I made it okay, but the guy smashed everything that had to do with my rear brak e." Lew is still managed a zero on th e loop but was two minutes lat e for the start of th e second loop du e to repa ir time. T akin g th e win in th e D, or Beginner , class was Don Plym al e riding in the 250cc division. He turned in a four-minute and 82-second ride. The second loop proved to be a real challenge, as speeds for the mos t part were im po ssible to ma intain. Put ting his hi gh speed skills to an advantage, Krau se uncorked in the 88 mph section and pulled th ree minutes on the ent ire field. " I j ust pulled ail th e time. I on ly got tied up behind two slower riders, and took it easy, and waited instead of blowing right by th em. " Next fastest through the fast section were Fullmer and Lewis, both dropping 16 minutes in that one section alone. Palenske, Miller, Kenny Parry and event ua l 125cc class winner Daria Van Stee were all real close wit h 17 an d 18 minutes through the tight, rocky specia l test that wore on for 10 miles. Contender Ted Hunnicutt's ride came to a dripping hault, as he found a Vvrock that hi s Kawasak i KX500 wouldn't fit th rough and left hi s water pump on the rock. One more fast section took at least one more point from most of the riders excep t Kraus e and Fullmer. Qu estion able check p laceme nt grabbed poin ts from eventual win ner Krau se, and a few others, with a bum in a 12 mph section. Right before this check, riders were man aging to get lost and att empt to climb up an impossibl e sand hill . On e rid er in this group was Palenske, "I go t lost. But I guess it was good, or I probably would 've burned ituhe check). Ins tead I zeroed it." Krause was upset at burning the check. . " I was rea l mad. I thought I had j ust thrown the enduro away . I was hoping that ther e would' be another sectio n to make up tim e in, but there wasn't and , as it ended up, I didn' t need it," said Krause. Also burning the check was Lewis. "T he m ilage was bunk, or they moved it (the check) forward more than a 10th (of a mile)," said Lewis. At th e finish , th e Team Greenl Answer/Bridgestone/ T subak i/ F&LI Sh o eilPow erb a r I Ma x i m a -b ack ed Krause learned tha t hi s incredible speed ithroughou t the lon g speci al test was enough to give him the win. Taking the B class overall was Honda rider Skip Cri sty with a 24minute ride , placing him a respectable 17th overall. Battling out the tough course was C class overall winner Josh Graham. " I have to thank Team Gyroped partner Jess for timekeeping," said Graham. " Even though I smoked him in the specials, he did a good job." Graham finished with a 33-minute ride, beating out next closest C rider, Doug Duncan, who scored 35. Other class winners included Super Senior A rid er Terry McDonald, Open B Skip Cristy, Yet 250cc BRick Sowma, Open C Doug Duncan, Open Senior Mike Keen and Women 's AAnn Cod y Merritt. aI Results (Unofficial) 0 / A: I.
