LOOKING BACK
It was "The Kid vs. The King" at Laguna Seca 40 years ago. Freddie
Spencer and Kenny Roberts went at it during the AMA Superbike race
at Laguna. The Kid, Spencer, gave The King a run for his money, but the
King prevailed winning both legs. Spencer beat out Wes Cooley for the
Superbike Production victory... Scott Parker won the AMA GNC Short
Track at Hinsdale, Illinois, and Scott Pearson won the Peoria TT two days
later... With just two rounds left, Brad Lackey took over the 500cc MX GP
points lead in Gaildorf, West Virginia.

The Bast brothers, Mike and Steve, were featured on the cover of Cycle
News 50 years ago. Steve had been recently invited to compete as a
member of the Wimberly Lion Speedway Team in England... Motocross
was going strong at Ascot, where Rich Thorwaldson topped Jim Wilson
and Jim West in the 500cc class, Tim Hart won the 250s and Gary
Bailey the 125s... In TT action, Mark Brelsford took the win at Ascot...
We covered all the happenings at Sturgis... Minibike racing took over
Saddleback Park.
