In respo nse to your coverage of the opening round of the Northern California AH RMA MX Series at Sandh ill Ran ch (March 18 issue), I feel the need io clarify some po ints and misquotes which ha ve ta rn ish ed my reputation as a fair competitor. My bike, a 1974 Kawasaki KX250, met with every rule stipulated by AHRMA for vintage competition. It was equipped with a very old pair of Fox Airshox of the correct length and allowing only fou r inch es of rear wheel travel as required by AHRMA and verified twice by tech inspection. I have won qu ite a few AHRMA motos on it as equipped and never received any objections from an y of my fellow competitors. Dick Mann, however, seems hell-bent on ban ishing these shocks from the track and it was at his insistence that my father an d I were both disqualified at Sandh ill Ran ch. Since this unfortunate incident, I have fina lly received and installed a pair of Works Performa nce shocks which I must report work' at least 100% better than the old Fox Airsho x ever did. I guess I actua lly owe Dick Mann a debt of thanks. I never knew the bike cou ld work th is good and I no w eagerly awa it the next event in the series. T o all my fellow competi tors, thanks for all the fun and good spo rtsman ship. To Dick Mann, we will see yo u at the track, legal to " yo ur" specifications and eager to get on with the fun of vintage racing without all this ugly nit-picking, which onl y serves to Cause strife and raise the cost of racing. DanSinkoff Finish Line Products Patchogue, NY The final w ord on 883s I am writing th is letter in response to the coverage of the Daytona round of the Harley-Davidson T win Sport series. I am ' deeply saddened to be involved in such a major controversy, therefore this rype of jo urna lism reall y hurts. There are several facts which I feel must be stated so that the readers of Cycle News will have enough informa tion to form their own opin ion s. The fact that I was over two seconds faster in qualifying may cause some people to wond er how. First ofall, my trap speed, as posted by the AMA, was 129.870 mph whil e the fastest H-D T win Sport bike was clocked at 128.388 mph. My bike was not the second fastest, bu t the seventh fastest. Could a rider have an ything to do with lap times? I had my best racing weekend ever at Daytona. Don 't forget that I finished 10th on a bike that only went 162 mph in a field of 175·180 mph motorcycles. I had a posi tive attitude, I set realistic goals, and worked very hard to achieve them. I am very sorry for any inconvience this has caused my spo nsors, the AMA, or race . fan s. Nonetheless, I am th e reig ning Nati onal Champion and my bike carries the #1 plate for one reason '- because I ride the wheels off it. Scott Zampach Milwaukee, WI Show and go BMW 's support o f vi ntage racing provided some big fun in the Bailie of the Legends race at Daytona. Tradition m ight have favored the inclusion of a coup le of riders who won cha mpionships for BMW in the original Bailie of the T wins Series. J oh n Long and David Ernde, certainly co ntempo raneous with J ay Sp rings teen , wou ld seem to have been logical choices. Co ncern ing John Lo ng, Cycle News com mitted a sin of o m issio n by fai ling to no te his magnificen t effort forging from deep in th e back of the sta rti ng gr id to victory in th e 500cc Sportsma n class aboa rd th e Rock ett Racin g 450 Du cat i. Th is is a motorcycle so beautifu lly cra fted as to lend new meaning to the term "sleepe r." John also turned in solid rides in 750cc Sportsman (third) and 500cc Premi er (fourt h) featuring great holeshots and charges thro ug h the field Congratulatio ns to John Long and the Rockett Racing Team for provi ding fams with a most excellent demon strati on of . show and go. John Micael O'Connor Alton ,-NH Extra special guy T his afternoo n I received a pho ne call from Ethan Goodrich. I had met him just a few weeks previous at the Motorcycle Dealernews Expo in Cincinnati. In those three days that we spent together at the trade show, we struck up a friendsh ip , and I also agreed to spo nsor his hare scramble efforts with my services. This call took incredibl e ellort for hi m to make, considering tha t he crashed his motorcycle at the March 5 Alliga tor Enduro in Florida . and is now tragica lly paralyzed from the chest down, with limited use of his arms and ha nds. The reason for his call was to let me know that someone by the. nam e of Joe Mason was going to be sending, me his mashed pipe for repa ir from Florida and Etha n req uested tha t I take care of him. Joe helped Ethan when he crashed. and stuck with him all the way. T aki ng care of Joe is a done deal. But more im po rtantly, Eth an and I want everyone to know that J oe Mason is one Fo llow ing h is victory in the Harley Daoidson T w in Sport f inal at Daytona Int ernational S peedw ay on March 8; Zampach was disqualified by the AMA for hav in g illeg al engine m od if ications. The " Z Ma n " has appealed the decision and h is a ppeal will be h ear d later in A p ril. . . . Ed itor. R VB-bed the wrong way In regards to your feature on the HarleyDavidson success story: So Mr. Bartels thinks that RUBs (Rich Urban Bikers) are better customers than us :'older" " real" Harley guys? Where were the RUBs back in the AMF days days when Harl eyDavidson was on the ropes? I have over 125,000 miles on Milwaukee Iron and can remembe r when Harleys were no t just an other fashi on fad for rich Yuppies. It is the old Harley guys who kep t H-D afloat thro ugh the hard times so they could be enjoying their present success. Yes, Mr. Bartels, we do work on o ur own mac h ines. I wa nt to make su re my. bike is road worthy since it does get 'ridden , not hauled on the back of a trai ler. If I do have a breakdown, I have th e kn owl edge to repai r it and get back hom e. Also, most work in g people canno t affo rd to pay $40 per hour shop ra tes. U nfo rt una tely, it seems as th ou gh Harl ey-Davidson agrees that their fu tu re lies in th e RUB market. I just received a Harley accessory cata log - full of rid icul ously overp riced "rnotorc lothes. " Harl ey is forcing their deal ers to turn th ei r shops into lea the r boutiques. Heaven hel p the biker wh o ac tua lly wa nts to buy pa rts for hi s moto rcycle at least th e aftermarket hasn 't forgotten abou t us. If a nyo ne at Harl ey is listen in g, I would like to give th em thi s bit of advice - don 't co unt o n livin g high on the " Hog" off your R UB bu sin ess forever. After they have fallen down and skinned their designer jeans, or had a rainstorm mess up th eir $100 coiffures, the R UBs will go back to their fan cy boats and Porsch es. Maybe th en you 'I1 start appre· ciat in g all of th e " rea l" Harley people. Ed "Smokey" Strodunan . Gilliam, MO
