9SUPERCROSS ~A~IS~_m_~_sS_~_~:_h_w_dl_O~~~~~~~~~~ ~ Bayle (right) was all smiles as he got a handshake from Cooper in the winner's circle. Swink prepared for the 125cc main under the watchful eyesof his mechanic Marshall Plumb. Swink led every lap for his fifth win of the 125cc Eastern Regional Seri es. 8 mistake or for th ose guys to get tir ed," said Bayle. But despite the clo se racing, nobody made a mistake and there was no sign of anybody tiring out, especially when Cooper upped the pa ce on lap 13 and pa ssed Stanton for th e lead . Stanton repassed him a lap later, and apparen tly Bayle was through watching. "I knew I was very fast through th e whoops and that I could make my move there," said Bayle, who went by both Bradshaw and Coo per in on e move. "I knew the only way to win was to pass everybod y and get away from them ." Get away he did, as he quickly reeled Stanton in and passed him in the sand trap at the end of lap 14 and pulled away to the win. Stanton had a couple of seconds on Cooper, but the battling wasn't over yet. Bradshaw passed Cooper for third pl ace on th e 16th lap, but befor e he could go after Stanton, Cooper . repassed him a lap later. Bradshaw then backed off slightly but stayed close enough to capitalize if Cooper were to mak e a mistake. But Cooper rode perfectly to the end and finished third, a few seconds behind Stanton. " Cooper w as scary, I couldn 't figure out wh at he was going to do," said Bradshaw. " When Bradshaw came up behind me he would rub his front tire on me," said Cooper sho wing off dirty tire marks on his left leg. " H e was scream ing at me to try to break my concen- tration, and I wasn 't go ing to let him do that. " While all th e acti on took place at the front, McGrath slipped into fifth just pa st the halfway po int and stayed th ere for his best-ever 250cc su percr oss finish. "I'm so happy, I was in there for five laps and felt stronger than last week," said McGrath, wh o finished sixth at the previous week's race in the Hoosierdome. " I didn 't want to try too hard at first and fade at the end." . Kiedrowski fini sh ed sixth while Mike LaRocco came from th e ba ck half of the pack to claim sevent h. Tichenor said his arms pumped up and he faded back to eighth wh ere he fini shed ah ead of Emig and Larry Ward . 125cc After an elaborate fireworks display for open ing ceremo n ies, th ere was pl enty of acti on in th e first half of the first six-lap 125cc heat as Brian Swink, Ch ad -P ed er so n and Mik e Brown swapped the lead. Brown emerged wi th first but crashed in th e sand pit at the end of lap two as Swink po wered pa st him. By this tim e Dou g H enry had moved to second, and aft er a close battle with Swink he took th e lead. During that battle he got ou t of shape and slammed Swink, wh o decided to back off and let H enry ride on to the win. Pederson finish ed a distant third. The second heat belonged to Suzuki's Ezra Lu sk, who led from start to finish . Texan Grayson G oodman fin ish ed eig h t seconds behind III second and was closely followed by Barry Carsten and Jimmy Button. Di am ond Motorsports/Bumpsticks/Tsuba ki-bac ked Rick Wetzel of Maryl and led the four-lap 125cc LCQ fro m start to fini sh . T he first attempt to start th e 125cc ma in saw a pileup that left Henry, Brown and Kevin Crine sprawled out on the start straight. Brown walked away with sore hands, and after severa l tens e moments Henry got up to reveal a cu t near his left eye. He was abl e to trot back to th e sta rt ing line wh ere DG Y mecha nics had ha stil y repaired hi s Yam aha YZI25 for the restart. Crine wa lked back to the pi ts and Brow n jo ined the restart half a lap dow n. L ike he did in the first start, Swink grabbed the holesh ot and was gone. By lap two of th e l5-lap race he had a five-second advantag e o n Pederson, wh o had Floridian Tim Ferry , Button and T exan Jeff Dement on his tail. Swi n k kept · pushing, and a'! th e halfway point was 15 seconds ah ead of Button, wh o had passed Peders on o n lap four. In th e second half of the race Swink's lead continued to grow and he finished 22 seconds ahead of Button. "The last co uple of weeks I slacked off and people thought they could beat me," said Swink. "I had no brakes, so I'm happy with second, " said Button, who had won the previous two 125cc mains. " Ho w are you going to beat Brian without brak es? It' s tough to beat him with brak es." Pederson maintained third to finish ahead of Dement and Ferry, and he was delighted to be on the podium. " It felt pretty good, and a bi t wet," said 20-year-old Princeton Honda/Pro Circuit-backed Pederson, who wa s doused with champagne by Swink and Button in the winner's circle. £N Results 250 HEAT 1: I.
