Both the Honda and BMW ABS system s use simi lar designs cons isting of three primary co m po ne n ts: a n electro n ic con tro l unit (ECU), a pair of hydraul ic pressure modulat or s, and speed senso rs at each wheel. With in Honda 's ECU is a 16-bit centra l processi ng unit that converts .signa ls from the two whee l sensors into speed data once every 3/ 1000ths of a second . The ECU then uses the data to ca lc u la te th e spec ific ra tes of acceleratio n , deceleration and tire sli p ratio. When braking, the ECU determin es the need for ABS control and if necessary, relays hydraulic pressure control signals to the modula tor (s). Each modula to r is he r me tica lly sea led and contains two high-speed soleno id valves. Honda's modulator s have three operation modes, unlike th e BMW system which has two. When the brakes are app lied hard, the ECU will detect th e wh eel' s tenden cy tow ards locking and rapidl y reduce hydraulic pressure to the calipe rs by simu ltaneously closi ng the inlet valve, ope n ing the o u tlet valve, sh ifting an expander p iston toward a backup piston and closing th e cutoff valve. After a predetermined decompressio n inte rva l, the ou tlet valve closes and hydrau lic pr essure is held, allo wing wh eel speed to recover. Once th e ECU detects wheel speed recovery, i t res tores hydra u lic pressure at the calipers by open ing the in let valve and closi ng the out let valve. ' Internal system pressure shifts the expander piston to the cutoff valve.
