On February 22, th e American Motorcyclist Association's Board of Trustees removed Paul Schlegel fro m h is position as Nort heast Region T rustee of the AMA in accordan ce with p rovisio ns set forth in the Association 's Code of Regulat io ns. T he removal com p leted a procedure in itiated at the Bo ard 's November 1991 meetin g , which foll owed a series of discus sions with an official cen sure of Schlegel by h is fello w trustees over time prior to tha t meeting. Schlegel appea red at the February 22 meeting in Cincinnati , Ohio, and provided evidence in hi s own defen se. Although this removal action was not a legal proceeding, the trustees also all owed Sch legel to have his attorney participate in h is defe nse during the meeting. At the concl usio n ,of Schlegel' s defense, th e trustees cons idered all the in for ma tio n availab le to th em and then unanimously voted by secre t ball o t to remove Sch legel from the Board. The removal wa s effecti ve i mm edia tely, th ereb y creating a vacan cy on th e Board. T hat vacan cy will be fill ed by the trus tees in accordance wi th th e AMA Code of Regulations. Rick Johnson, who retired fro m m otocross last year due to wrist inj uries, made his professiona l car racing debut at the Mickey T hompson Off-Road Championship Gran Prix in hi s ho metown of Sa n Diego , Ca lifornia, February 22. J ohnson finished eig ht h overall out of a field of 12 in th e Grand Na tional Sport T ru ck event. " It 's a lo t different from mo tocross," sai d J ohnson, who dr ives fo r Chevro let. T wo-time Wor ld Champion Wayne Rainey continue d hi s remarkab le recovery from a broken leg by circulating under the lap record during the IRTA tests in Jerez, Sp ain, on February 21-22. Ra in ey clicked off a o ne-mi nute, 46.71-second lap during the test sessio n, . 171-of-a-second under the lap record he set at the track at the 1991 Sp anish Grand Prix last May. Rainey broke his leg and suffered ligament damage in October while testing for the final GP of the season in Malaysia. IN THE WIND ChuckClay-ton,,-=-= 5--=-=ยท19~ _ _ 19-=-=-3 92~ C harles " Ch uck" Clayton, the founder of Cycle News , pass ed a way o n T h ursday , February 20, one week after su fferinga stro ke at hi s Cambr ia , California, home. . Clayton was born o n Decem ber 21, 1935, in Wh ittier, California. H e became a motorcycle enth usiast wh ile in high school, tra veling to and from school on a Triumph. After graduatin g from Whittier Hi gh School, he earned an assoc ia te art degr ee at East Los Angeles Junior College and then a B.A. in Eng lish at UCLA-Ramo na. He ma rr ied Sharon Pot ter of Las Vegas, Nevad a, in 1953. ' After workin g for Floyd Clym er o n th e editoria l staff of Cycle magazine, he an d Sh aron moved to New York City. There he served as an art director at Vogue magazin e. The Claytons then moved to Montreal , Canada , whe re he publ ish ed a loca l jazz newsletter and coordinated the bookin g of jazz musician s for Montreal nightclubs. Returning to southern Ca lifornia, the Claytons mad e thei r hom e in Long Beach , and Chuck went to work for J oe Parkhurst at Cycle Wor ld magazine. In 1965, th e Claytons purchased a Los Angeles-area motorcycle publication, and renamed it Cycle News, wh ich they pu blished weekl y wi th Chuck servi ng as p ub lisher and edi tor , and Sharon as business manager. In th e lat e sixties, an O hi o-based mo torcycle publication was p urchased fro m J ohn Penton and its titl e changed to Cycle N ews East . It was published bi-weekl y. In 1971, the Cla ytons continued th e expansion, launching a bi -weekly Dixie edition in Atla nta. In 1973, publ ication .of a bi-weekly Cen tral edi tio n began in Au stin , T exa s. The East and Dixie edi tio ns merged the same year, and carried the Cycle News East herald. Occu pi ed with the launch ing of th e Central editio n, Chuck named Sharon publisher in 1973 an d at th esame time vaca ted the edi tor's cha ir, although he returned as interim editor from time to time over th e next severa l years. Cycle N ews Central was short-lived, as was A TV News , a bi -weekly all- terrain veh icle newspaper of th e eig hties, and SMA R T , an ATV and personal wa tercra ft industry publication. In 1986, Cycle News East and W est were combi ned in to a national 'edition. ' Following th e purchase of a second home in Cambria, California, Chuc k became increasingly less active in the daily business of the publications, which at the tim e of hi s death were Cycle News, Motorcycl e R oad Racer Ill ustrated Y earbook, and Personal Wat ercraft Ill ustra ted. Recent projects he was invol ved in included th e form ation of the Clayton Fou ndatio n , wh ich is rai sing fu nds to aid injured motor cycle racers; and th e designing of a bicycle mo tor. Clayton is survived by hi s wife Sharon, son J am es Brian , mother Mary, and two sisters, Evelyn Combs and Betty Clayton. Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, February 25, at 1:30 p.m. in the Church of Our Father Chapel at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Cypress, California. In lieu of flowers, th e family requests donations be made to the Clayton Foundation, P.O. Box 498, Lo ng Beach , CA 90801. Rainey's Marlboro Yam ah a teammate John Kocinski was the second fastest ' 500cc rider at the J erez tests, turning in a I:46.88 lip. Third fastest was Cagiva's Alex B arro s (1:48.63), who was faster than h is four-time World Champion teammate E d d ie Lawso n (1:49.02). Fifth fastest was Ducados Yamaha 's Jua n Garriga (1:49.02), followed by th e returning Randy M a mola (I :49.42), Niall Mackenzie (1:49.73), Australian P e t e r Goddard . (1:51.84), M iguel DuH ame l (1:51.84) and D o m in ique Sarron (1:53.25). Championsh ip runner-up Helmut Bradl ended the IRT A test as the fastest 250cc rider. Twoti me 125cc World Champion Loris Capirossi, wh o has made th e jump to th e 250cc class, ended the session as the 10th fastest 250cc rider wi th a 1:51.88. Italian 250cc compe titor Loris Reggiani suffered a broken sho ul der, cuts and bruises when he cras hed th e factory Aprilia in Jerez. Reggi ani finished sixth in the 1991 250cc World Championship, winning the Fren ch GP at Paul Ricard along the wa y. Road racer S t e v e Guanc he finished 12th recently in his first race since breaking his leg at the Miami Grand Prix last November . In addition, Guanch e married Sue Ann Morisse in Coconut Grove, Florida, on February 15, an d the two will honeymoon at Daytona during Camel 'Cycle Week. Round two of the AMA National Ch am pi onship R oad R a ce Series scheduled for Texas W orld S p e e dw ay on April 11-12 ha s been moved to Ma y 16- I 7. The Laguna Seca Internat ional Racewa y round of the series scheduled for April 25-26 will now be the second ro und of the series. T he T exas event will be the fourth ro und of th e championsh ip, foll owing Daytona, Lagu na Seca and the May 23 ro und at Ch arl o tte Mo tor Speedway. According to the AMA, th e T exas World Speed way ro und was mo ved to " free up th e race track's spring schedule a lit tle bit." ' Kawasaki will be holding dem onstration rides on all its street-go ing motorcycles during Camel Cycle Week at Daytona.
