Now spa nn ing II days, the "w eek" offers a seemingly unlimited vari ety of things to do. T ho ug h racing rightfull y comes to mind first, Dayton a Cycle Week o ffers mu ch , mu ch more than that. T his year's an nual ga thering of m otorcycl ist s o ffe rs swa p m eet s, motorcycle sho ws, au ctions, banquets, roa d tours, du al sport rides, workshops and mu ch mor e. H ighlighting the racin g is the big one - th e Daytona 200 by Arai. T he 5 1st edition of th e race promises to cap the week with a new winner. Las t yea r 's vi ctor, Can ad ian Mi gu e l DuHamel is going Gr and Prix racin g th is year a nd won 't compe te a t Daytona. Superbike cha mp T ho mas Stevens and Scott Rus sell are two riders to keep an eye o n . Th ey're n ow teammates on the Muzzy Kawa saki team. Oth er road race eve n ts abo u nd throughout th e week. Don 't forget Friday's " T win 50's ," a pair of 50-mil e qualifiers that determine th e start ing po siti ons in the Daytona 200. T he "s print " quali fers may be the races to see if you 're not into wat ching a two hour race. Road racing isn't the o nly form of com pe titio n going on in Daytona dirt track fan s ca n spec tate virtually every night of the week. Racing at Municipal Stadium, and at nearby lax Raceway and Vol usia County Raceway provide plenty of sliding actio n. The '92 AMA National Championsh ip 600cc Dirt Track Seri es gets underway Friday night , March 6, at Municipa l Stadium. See team HarleyDavidson's perennia l 600cc cha m p Chris Carr strut his stuff around the cru shed limestone short track. Most of th e sam e rid ers will return o n Saturda y night for the o pening round of the '92 AMA Grand Nat ional Championship/Camel Pro Series. As of late, defending and four-tim e Grand Nation al Champion Sco tt Pa rke r hasn 't faired well at Daytona, failing to score points twice in h is last three Grand Nati o na l ra ces in Florida . Parker hopes to change hi s luck in '92 en route to his fifth- straight Grand National title, whi le his teammate a nd runner-up for th e pa st three years, Carr. has other ideas. Supercross fans can see round seven of the Cam el Supercross Ser ies: the Daytona Supercros s by Honda, Saturday, March 7. Already well underway, the series has thus far been dom inat ed by T eam Yamah a' s Dam on Brad shaw . Alth ou gh he was victori ou s in the 1989 125cc Eastern Region al main event , Brad shaw ha s never won the 250cc feature at Daytona and would like to add the race to hi s gro wing list of acco mplishments. O n the 0 1her hand , two-time Supercross Cha mpion j eff Stanto n would like 10 score hi s fourthco nsecutive Daytona Supe rcross victory on the lon g, long course designed and built by' Professor Ga ry Bailey. That would be on e for the record book s. W 10 If you 're a big race fan, but yo ur " better half" isn 't and insists that yo u spend some time catchi ng rays o n the beach or at poolside, you .can catch most of the races on WNDB 11 50 AM radio. Of course, th e famou s Daytona International Motorcycle Show takes place dai ly behind the grandstands at the speedway, wh ile the AHRMAhosted 12th Annual Concours d'Elegance Vintage Motorcycle " Show takes p la ce in the speedway infield o n Friday, Mar ch 6. If you're into custom bik es, no trip to Daytona would be complete without checking o ut Big Daddy Ra t's Custom Bike Show at the Ocean Center parkin g lot on Saturday morning, March 7. There, you can show off your cus tom machine, and/or check out hundreds of o ther creations. It 'll be the most chro me that you ' ll ever see in o ne place - guaranteed. Howard johnson's on Atlantic Blvd. wi ll h ost the American Motorcycle H eritage Foundation Breakfast o n Saturday morning, March 7. Depending o n your cho ice of hangouts, the nightlife in Daytona can be as wild as some of th e bik es yo u' ll see at Big Daddy Rat 's show or on Main Street. Venture out into the night every day you 're in Daytona and you still won 't have tim e to visit every wat ering hole in th e city. From the" risq ue Shark Lounge to som e of th e more genteel spots, Daytona 's night life has something for everyone. Good restaurants can be found th rou gh out Dayton a and in surrounding towns. Whi le the area offers many other att ractions , ran ging from Di sn ey World to th e Space Center, you 'll be hard pressed to find the time to get o ut of town if you take in th e coun tless offerings that mak e Daytona Cycle Week . .. well, th e week for motorcyclists.
