I have J>een going to motocross/ supercross races for 15 years and never have I been m o re upset with th e a ttitude of supercross fans th an I was a t Anaheim. Wh en Jean-Mic he l Bayle was introduced, he was booed I T h ere was a " Ba yle go home" sig n above us. Bayle is o ne of the most gifted racers in th e wo rld and I was ashamed for th e American supercross fans. I recentl y attended a " Harley race" fo r the first time in abo u t eight years . Although H arl ey-Davidso ns ar e n ot m y style. . I must say that supercross fans cou ld learn something ab out class fro rp th is racing crowd, In tru th, th e riders could too, like clean racing and good atti tu des, something tha t seems to ha ve van ished in the last couple o f years in supercross , Maybe it's j ust tha t the H arley crowd was o lder a nd more mature a t th e Pomona Fairgrounds tha n the heavy metal loudmouths th a t seem to infest th e stadium events. The truth is I enjoyed th e flat track even in g mor e and wi ll ta ke m y young son to the Harley races long befo re a supercross race. It's a shame, because I believe motoc rossers a re the u lt ima te racers on two wheels. Stev e Miranda Placentia. One last tr ip to Baj a, against the doctor's orders, took more stre ngth tha n th e old "T ra il Boss" had to spare an d he DNF. H e will be greatly missed by enth us iasts everywhere who shared hi s p assion for o ur sport . But somewhere next weekend, a tra il rider will stop to help a kid get h is clapped-ou t two -strok e restarted , a nd an old pro will pa use to g ive some tips to a novice throwing himself against a hi ll for th e hundredth tim e. AZ Four-stroke award Just a lit tle note to set straigh t some facts regard ing the WERA P ro Series press release on the FTM & Associates Fram /Bendix / Auto lite/ R K Chain Four-Stroke Award ; T he original concept da tes back to Oc tober 15, 1991, when Frank Miyake of FTM & Associa tes agreed to post the awa rd . T here has a lready been a win ner; T o m Kipp at the 1991 WERA G ra nd Na tio na l Final was paid the a ward after finishing top four- stro ke. This was rep ort ed by Cycle News in its coverage o f th e GNF. Aside fr om the award , FTM & Associates is a significant WERA Pro Series sponsor that is helping the sport to grow. Pro Series anticipates a nd looks forward to paying th e FourStroke Award again in 1992. Evelyne L. Pritz President. WERA Hilton Head Island. SC Honda winless streak After learning that Damon Brad shaw won th e San Diego Supercross, I began to wonder how long it has been si nce a Honda ha s not won a supercross this far into th e season. I am guessing 1981, wh en Suzuki wa s the dominant team. Stephe n Beeler Port H u ron, MI Your gu ess is right on the m on ey. In 1981, H onda wa s shu t out of th e win ne r's circle as Suz u k i-mou n ted riders - Mark Barn ett, Kent Howerton and Darrell S hultz - won the first seven rounds of the I2-round AMA Supercross Series. Bob Hannah then scored a win for Yamaha, and Barnett cam e back with th ree straig ht w ins for Su zuki' to win the series cham p ionship, Yamaha 's Broc G lover won the final round of th e '81 series . . . Ed itor. Caring and not caring I would like to acknowledge the respons ib le actions of Daryl Fo lks a nd Scott Morris a t the Gold Strike Hare & H ound. They stopped for a downed ra cer two miles into the race . Daryl stayed with him while Scott went ba ck to th e start for h elp. However, they were not th e firs t riders on hand, two ot he r racers sto p ped before th em but contin ued on to in form check p ersonnel further into th e race . This is blatant irr esp onsibility as th e injured racer was in coherent. Fo rt u natel y, Daryl a nd Scott took th e time a n d found he needed medica l attention . As desert race rs, we are all responsib le for each other whe n we are racing. That means all desert racers, no o ne is exem p t even if #1 is on the line. Daryl a nd Sco tt p ro ve d th at l Bo th are winners and a re capable of overall victory o n any g iven weeken d. Le t's a ll follow th eir exa m p le of sports ma nship a nd not a llow a win to be more im portant th an a life. Tom Willis R eddin g .
