Dave Ondas was fourth overall and third in th e O pe n class. Paul Kra use led th e pack at th e bomb a nd eventually finished third overall . Crandall , and Kawasaki KX250 riders Dan Richa rdso n a nd Roger H urd, a nd H onda's Dan Ash craft in ho t pursuit. Parry was half a minu te ahead o f Os tbo in the Vet division in 14th o vera ll; Capt was two pl aces ahead o f 'Su m mers in th e 125cc battle, and Maxim had hi s work cu t o ut trying to dea l with Seni or rival Ri chard J ackson . T he lead battle raged on for th e last 18 mi les of loop one . Roeseler and H unnicutt were still side by side wh en th ey hit pit row for the second time, but this time. Roeseler was out in front . T he ot her pos it io ns stayed mu ch th e sam e, except for Lewi s, who arr ived fo u r p laces back in sevent h and lost mo re th an a m in u te gearin g up fo r th e second loop. " I hit a roc k wit h m y foot a bo u t five miles fro m th e end o f th e loop a nd it ca used me to ca rtw heel. I broke m y helmet a nd tor e m y chest p rot ector off , so I had to stop a nd pu t on new gear," Lewis said. • The KTM priva teer , Lewis, da sh ed into loo p two and did not sto p to chec k hi s injuries until th e race was over. " I tho ug h t my toes were sor e bu t w he n I fin ally took m y boot 0[[ I knew I' d do ne so me damage," said Lewi s. " I was too scar ed to look a t it (t he Ioot ), but I g uess I broke so me o f m y toes ." T he next day Lew is had to have su rgery on th e foot. " I had to hav e th em o pera ted o n a nd I'v e got some wire a nd som e pins in m y foot right now," said Lew is fro m hi s home two da ys a fter th e race. T he 40-mi le seco nd loop ran east th rough Searles Valley, tu rned north to wa rds Na vy Ro ad a nd then head ed into a gr u e li ng tec h nical sectio n throug h th e m ountains. " W it h no du st you co u ld literally get I0 to 15 feet be h ind a rid er an d ke y o ff h im. You co u ld see everythin g he di d a nd make up for a ny m istakes he mad e. We just keyed o ff each o the r a nd swapped pos itio ns every now a nd th en . We did th a t 90% of th e race ." Ca pt a nd Su m mers were st ill nose to tail in th e 125cc battle, a nd Ostbo a nd Parry were d icing in Cl ass 30. " We hung toge ther for abou t the first 15 Don Griewe was third off the start but dropped back to fifth at the checkered flag. mi les of th e last loop ," sai d Parry. " I wish th ere'd been more rocks ," said O stb o. " I rea lly started to feel good in the second loop a nd I pi cked o ff a lot of people. The young b ucks were ge tti ng tir ed in th e wh oops. T hey need to work out more." T he rocks began just as H un ni cutt lau nch ed his final assa u lt on Roese ler . A slight bobble put him behi nd th e leader and, in h is rus h to ca tch u p , he mad e a seco nd mi stak e just th ree mil es from th e fini sh . "I hi t a ro ck with m y rear wheel a nd it sp it th e bik e arou nd 180 degrees. I went down in th e roc ks and hu rt m y rib s." said Hunnicutt. " At tha t poi n t th ere was no wa y I was goin g to ca tch Roeseler, There wasn't enough tim e a nd I kn ew I wasn 't going faster th an he was in th e rocks. T here 's no body bet ter than him th ere." Nevertheless, H unn icutt closed to withi n half a minute of h is team ma te bu t time ra n o ut. After two-an d -a-h al f hours o f racing, Roeseler cross ed the lin e with a 38-second margin to tak e h is first overa ll win and his seco nd 250cc cla ss w in o f th e series. " It was a good race all day ," said Roeseler , wh o is backed by Ka wasa ki T eam G ree n , FMF. Race T ech, Tsu bak i, Shoei, Bel-Ray, Renr ha l, Oak ley, Trick, Thor, Acerb is and Sco tt. "I wo ul d lead for a wh ile th en H un n icu tt wo u ld lead. We went hack a nd fort h a ll da y. The course was a littl e fast but th e condi tions mad e it fast, too. It was marked rea lly wel l." Hunn icutt was ho lding hi s rib s wh en he dism ounted in the fin ish ch u te. "It hurts pr etty bad, " said Hunnicu tt. " Fall ing ruined my pl an. I was go ing to make m y move in th ose last few miles." Krau se crossed th e lin e two minutes behin d H unni cutt for th ird , a n d O ndas kept a steady pace going all th e way to fou rt h. Griewe sco red th e Four-Stroke class win in fifth , despit e losin g hi s rea r sh ock five m iles into th e second loop, an d Os tbo top ped th e Vet class in sixt h , six plac es ahead o f class riva l Kenn y Parry. . Lewis brought hi s KTM horn e in seventh overa ll for seco nd in th e 250 cla ss, edging Ash craft by just a few feet. .
