GSUPERCROSS AMA Camel Supercross Series: Round 5 ~ J eff Ward (6) ran thi rd unt il he aggravated an an kle inj ury and dropped to 14th at the fin ish , while teammate Jeff Matia sevich (9) dropped from fou rth to 10th. A hard heat- race crash left Bayle with a sore back and headache. 10 qualifier from start to fin ish. Only the top two finis hers got a ticket to the main, and J eff Emi g, who crashed out of th e first semi , earn ed a spot in the featur e whe n he passed Todd DeH oo p at the ha lfway point and rode to a seco nd pl ace fin ish a few seconds behind winner Dymond. . At th e start of the 20-lap main event , a trio of factory -backed Kawasa kis were leadi ng the way with Kiedrowski out front ahead of tea mma tes J eff Ward and Mati asevich . Bradsh aw rounded the second turn fourth, followe d by Ba yl e, Keh oe , S tanton, Cra ig , Tichenor , La Rocco and the rest of the 20-rider field . Before the ·first lap was completed , Brads haw had moved to second and clo sely tai led Kiedro wski, who was lead in g a supercro ss for the first time in his career. " It felt good," said Kiedrowski. " I thou gh t, 'This is where I sho u ld be all th e tim e' and tri ed not to get overanxiou s." For the next two laps Kiedro wski led the way with Bradsh aw in h is tracks. Stanton passed Keh oe on the first lap and was bat tl in g with h is Hon da teammate Bayle, as they both stalked Matiasevich. On lap four , Kiedrowski made a slig h t bobble in the whoo ps and gave Bradshaw the opportunity he needed to pass. " I fig ured he'd get around if an ything happened, " said Kiedrows ki. Within one lap Bradshaw pu t two seconds on Kiedro wski, and a lap later h e added a not he r seco nd to hi s cushion. But that' s as far as he'd get for the nex t several laps. " I wanted to get a good lead righ t away becau se Kiedrowski can p ick up you r lines," sa id Brad sh aw. " H e pushed me away from everyone." " Bradshaw was going fast and we p ulled awa y," added Kiedrowsi. " I fel t I cou ld stay wi th h im." Nobody else cou ld keep up with the two front-runners. J eff Ward held on to third but had sli pped several seconds behind Kiedrowski. Matiasevich and Stanton soo n made it a three-way du el for th ird , and Bayle wasn 't far behi nd. Mati asevich passe d Ward ent erin g the long whoop section on the eigh th lap, bu t Sta nton went by them bo th as th ey exited the obstacle. Bayle also passed Ward in the nex t turn as Ward began slowing consi derably. " I hu rt my ankle and knee last week in Seattle, and 1 ran over my (injur ed) ankle," sai d Ward , who also inj ured his hand in the Seattle practice crash. " I cou ldn' t put weig ht on my left leg. " Mati asevich was the next to fad e. Bayle passed h im for fourth on the ninth lap , then Mat iasevich bega n to slip back. " I cou ldn ' t do an yth ing," Matiasevich later to ld his teammates, then added, " I had probl ems with my upper arms pumping up. " Up front, Brad shaw's lead went from four to 12 seconds when Kiedrowski went down in the whoops on lap 13. "T he whoops were real slip pery," sa id Kiedrowsk i. " I h it on e, sli d sideways and hi t a hay ba le. L ucki ly I kept the bike ru nn ing." Kiedrows ki couldn' t get up before Stanton motored by, bu t he did resume in third place, just in front of Bayle. Further back, La Rocco had made his way to fifth place a nd led a tight group con sisting of Craig, Matiasevich , Larry Ward, Coo per and Dubach . Stanton did all he could to catch Brad shaw, and act ually gained a coup le secon ds as Brad shaw backed off sligh tly after Kiedrow ski fell . " I may have don e the wrong th ing because ) started riding sloppy," said Bradshaw. " Brian (L unn iss) got on me wit h the cha lkboard a nd stra igh tened me out." Brad shaw 's brie f stint of " sloppy" riding didn 't ma ke much differen ce since Sta nton was far behi nd and th en . he cras hed on lap 18. "I loo ped out," said Stanton, whose H onda fl opped o ff th e side of a tabl eto p jump wi th Stanton sti ll ho lding the bars. Bot h Kiedr ow ski and Bayle went by Sta nton and they battled to the end with Kiedrowski holding off Bayle's last-ditch efforts to take second beh ind winner BradshawBayle was th ird. " Kiedrowski rode a bit slow on the las t lap ," said Bayle, who once again was subjected to some boo ing from the crowd, alt hough much less than he was forced to listen to at the Ana heim ro und two weeks before the San Diego event. " ) ro de a b it slow a t the beginning because 1 didn't know if 1 cou ld ma ke it with my headache. Then I pushed a little harder and tried to be smooth becaus e 1 didn't want to crash again." Stanton remo unte d from hi s cras h to finish a distant fo urth , w h ile La Rocco held off a last-lap challenge from Larry Ward to claim fifth. Not far behind sixth -placed Ward came Cooper and he crossed the finish lin e seven th with Dub ach in h is sha dow. Craig and Mati asevich comp leted the top 10. 125cc From the first l25cc heat race, it was clear that defendin g Western Region al Champion Jere my McG rath was go ing to be the one to beat. McG rath got the holeshot in the first heat and led North County Yamaha's Tyson Vohland to the fin ish lin e. Sur prisin gly, Suzuki suppo rt rider Phil La wrence won th e second hea t wit h a better time tha n McGra th, per haps beca use he was push ed n ea r th e en d by Bu dd y Antunez. T he mo st exci ting I25cc acti on came in the last cha nce q ua lifier. where Motion Sports-backed Cha un McAlister of Idaho led a wi ld ba ttle to th e fin ish line . Bubba Erickson passed Scott Myers on the las t lap to fin ish second wit h Mark Easley finis hing close beh ind Myers in fourth. T here was Iittle action amo ng the top five in the mai n. McGrath go t the ho leshot wit h J im my Ga ddi s on h is tai l, but by lap thr ee of the 15-lap race McGrath had pu lled out a three-second adva nt age. H e kept a steady pa ce thro ug ho u t th e main a n d a dded another two seconds before he Crossed the finish line. "T he tra ck was harder tha n the competition ," said a perhaps rightfull y cocky McGrath. "T he whoops grooved up so it was hard to be consistent. ) felt confident where 1 was a t. I'm looking forward to racin g the 250s, and I' ll be even more dominan t whe n th e W estern Region al Series resum es because the 250s will ma ke me even stro nger." " I was a little rusty a t first," said Gaddis. " I tried to get my lines down but couldn't reel h im in ." But reeling in Gadd is late' in th e race was Antunez. who had started fourth. Bu t tim e ran out before he could strike and Ant unez fini shed th ird. Kyle Lewis passed Voh land on the last lap to fin ish eN fou rth . . Resul ts 125 HE AT I: I. J erem y McG ra. h (H o n); 2.
