The event al so proved that even in the Go lden State Nationals it 's not . al ways 'gold' that glitters, as Silver State Raceway in Carson City, Nevada, greeted riders with a sun ny day which mark ed the first time in the 16-year history of th e series, that a race was staged outside of California. Bein g the only "split" round of the series, wi th a round also taking place in sout hern California, th e one-day event featured all classes running on the same track and, with 18 motos, the action literall y stretched from sunrise to su nset. Scooter .McElroy roosted his GP Racin g Suzuki into the lead to begin th e first 125cc Pro moto as Voh land, Steve Nelson, Spud Walters and Scott Myers con tro lled th e top five positions . Smith shadowed in sixth place, Vohland diced with McElroy and, after a lap-and-a-half , was abl e to get by. It took Vohland an other lap to shake him loose but once he did so he began to open up a lead. Walt ers passed Nelson for third on lap two as Meyers and Smith du eled for fifth. Sm ith was able to slip by Meyers a lap later and they both went around Nelson when he bobbled in a turn. By midmoto, Smi th was pas t Walters and pressuring second-p lace McElroy while Meyers foll owed in fifth. These [our riders were lightly packed so when McElroy got a little ou t of sha pe, th at was all that Smith needed to advance to second with Walt ers foll owin g into third. A lap later Meyers and McElroy traded positions. By the whi te flag, Smith was able to shave off a cou p le of seconds from Vohland's lead but it wouldn' t be enough as they headed to th e checkered flag to fin ish 1-2. Walters was abl e to fend off Meyers for third place while McElroy held off a determ in ed Shane Esposito to fini sh fifth . Meanwhile, Smith commandeered second from Holland as Vohland closed back in from fourth. Vohland was soo n sparring with Holland and found the rookie rather tough as he passed him once only to have Holland coun ter with a repass. But then ·Voh land delivered a clean combination that carried him past Holland and then by Smith and Meyers in the next few turns to assume the lead whi ch he held to th e checkered flag . Meyers followed him across the lin e for second ahead of Smith, but Smith claimed second overa ll. Holland finished fourth but a first rnoto 13th held him to eighth overall. Steve Nelson fought his 'way in for fifth and the same overall while Walters limped his ai ling machine in at ninth for fourth overa ll. At th e start of the first 250cc Pro moto, Smith and Myers came out swinging but Smith soo n had th e advantage which he would hold to the finish. Behind the lead battl e Walters and McElroy diced ahead of Holland while Voh land was buried deep in the pac k. Aft er three laps. Vohland wa s aro u nd McElroy for fourth and gai ning on Walters. It took Vohland thr ee laps to overtake h im for third, but th en Vohland fell and Walt ers went back by. With on ly two laps to go.
