"I thought they would red flag it, but they didn't, so I figured I'd have some fun ," said Hea ley, who cruised around the track for the remainder of the race. Broo ks was another rider who expected the red flag: "I slowed way down, expecting a red flag . By the time I realized they weren't gonna throw it , I was in last place! I guess it was my fault, though," said Brooks. Team Kawasaki's Mike Craig assumed the lead and went on to score a runaway win , 'wh ile Bader Manneh gree ted the checkers in second . Brooks rode like a madman after realizing th at there would be no restart, and managed to work up to third. Brooks scored the overall win , since Cr aig su ffered a derailed chain in the. open in g moto and did not finish. ' Second overall went to Manneh, while Crumb collected the third place cash . "T his is great, I came out here to practice, and ended up making $3000 in Yamaha money," said the personable Brooks. "My shoulder started to hurt near the end, but I really surprised myself. I still have all my speed, and the endurance will come." . Tim Nash grabbed the holeshot in the first 250cc Ju n io r moto, but couldn 't hold off a hard-charging Karl Lindstrom. Lindstrom mo tored past and ran away with the win, whi le Nash tired an d dropped to an eventual fourth. Second went to Merle Hammer, who fended off the race-long charges of Erik Mar tin. In moto two, Lindstrom again took control early on and ro mped off with the win, while Nash endured to cross the line in second. Hammer and Joey Mendoza argued over third, with Hammer getting the nod. Lindstrom scored the overa ll, whi le Hammer's 23 topped Nash's 4-2 for second overall. Herbert Allen pi loted hi s Kawasaki to the first moto win in the Old Timer Junior class. Rich Hansen rode a determined race, and fended off the race-long charges of Karl Scanlan. Jim Whi te finished fourth, ahead of a hardcharging GQ Larry Kirsch. Moto two saw Allen again assume the early lead an d motor off to an uncontested win, but this time it was Scanlan who finished second. Hansen did all he could to find a way past, but was forced to settle for third. Allen scored the overa ll win, while Scan lan's 3-2 topped Hansen 's 2-3 for second overall. _ . "After I saw my p icture in Cycle Ne ws a few weeks ago, I decided to train harder. I looked like a goon," said Hansen, happy to finish third. O 'Neal/Escondid o Cycle Cen terbacked Den n is Dah lin II used his hornetrack advantage to score the 125, 250 and 500cc Intermediate class wins. In the first I25cc Intermediate rnoto, Mike Metzger and David Pingree ran away from the field , while Dahlin followed a few seconds behind in thi rd. Metzger got the best of Pingree and scored the first moto win. In moto two , Metzger suffered a terrible start, as did Pi ngree . Steve Andrich assumed the lead early in the moto and went on to score the win ahead of a hardcharging Dah lin , while Pin gree and Metzger worked up to third and fourth, respectively. Dah lin 's more consistent 3-2 finishes edged Pingree's 2-3 for the overall win. Dahl in grabbed the holeshot in the opening 250cc Intermediate moto, but Metzger was hot on his tail. Metzger went down hard in the opening laps and Dah lin cruised away with the moto win. Pi ngree greeted the chec kers in second, ahead of Terry Parsons and David Evilsi zer.
