Hamel caught Desert M.C.'s hare in a rock y cany on on the second loop, an d earned a $100 donation to Rescue 3' in his name, but the rest of the 40mile secon d loop was unevent ful. Krause was still . hard on the gas in second. All he saw of Hamel was an occasional cloud of dust , bu t the re was enough goi ng on behind him to make the race exci ting. "I pa ssed H unnicutt about halfway around the last loop," said Roeseler. "We got into some tight stuff and I could finally close in. T hen I caught Krause bu t I woke him up. H e gassed it up and j ust dusted me out and there was no more tight stuff, so I couldn't catch him." Lew is was chasing hard trying to stay with the 250cc class leader, but he too was having trouble with the dust. "I kep t pushing but I had a lot of problems passing people in the dust," Lewis explained. " It was a real desert race. It had some techn ical stuff, but it was a lit tle fast for my taste." Further back in the pack, Os tbo was ma king ground fast and ha d taken over the Vet class lead and a close ba ttle was shaping up in the Over 40 di vision, as Bob Wad low, Ri chard Jackson, T om Holmes and Bill Maxim were all wit hin striking distance of the round one honors. . " Parry had been off th e race course al most as long. "I ha d my accident six mon th s and 26 days ago. I'm ra cing again and I wasn't even sup po sed LO be going back to work aga in until February," said Parry.
