Dan Barnett (9) swept both motos in the 125cc Novice Division One class. Vohland rakes in cash at Sandhill Ranch By Tom Prichard B RENTWOOD CA, jAc\'. 26 , yso n Vohland drove eigh t hours north to Sandhill Ranch after finishing fourth in the 125cc class at the Anaheim Supercross the previous night and scored the 125 and 250cc Pro class victories. Voh land took home over $6000 for winning both . classes, and main competition came fro m his younger brother, Tallon. Tyson appeared to be none the worse for the wear, althoug h he did admi t to a Iittle fatigue at the end of the day. " I' m a li ttle bit tired, but sometimes I th ink it's better just to race a 10 1." said Tyson. " You don't have time to think about the race or get up tig ht" you're just a litt le bit tired and just ride more off reflexes like you do in practice." Over 500 rid ers turned out 10 take part in the GFI North Series event and T 24 they were treated to another weekend of dynamite weather. The track was in excellent shape th rougho ut the day, and everyone was able to com plete thei r full share of racin g. The first 250cc Pro class mo to saw series point leader Allan Dyck take the lead away from holeshot artis t Danny Nelson in turn two wh en Nelson made a slight bob ble. T hi rd go ing into the back sectio n of the track was Rusty H oll and with fourth belonging to the T eam Nort h Co u n ty Yama ha / Yamaha /Yoko/Shoei/Moto I/Dunlop / Scott-sponsored Tyson Vohland: Dyck im mediately opened up a 10 length lead as they worked their way back arou nd to the fro nt section. Tallo n Vohland was rapidly making up for a poor start and moved int o fifth by the end of th e second lap. By the end of the thi rd lap , Tyson had passed H olland for th ird and Tal lo n moved 10 fourth and was just 10 bike lengths behind his bro ther. On lap fo ur H olland step ped off on the uphill sweeper and dropped back 10 eight h, the n two laps later dropped out with unknown p roblem s. In the m eantim e, the Vohland brothers had fr eigh t-trained past Nelso n an d were in second and third. No leen-spo ns ored Dyck still main tained his co mfortable lead at th e ha lfway po int, but on lap six he bobb led just past the fini sh lin e in a tight hairpin turn and allowed the Vohlands to close to within o ne bike length as they started back up the hill. T yson made a drive around th e outside, but the Ca na dian Yamaha rider was able to hold his line thro ugh the turn at - the top and main tained his position. As they entered the fast uphill before droppi ng into a hu ge pit o n th e back side of the tra ck, Tyson fou nd a li ttle extra driv e and pulled alo ngs ide of Dyck. For the next several seco nds the leaders were o u t of sig ht but when they reappeared it was T yson wh o had taken th e lead and Tallon came out of the pit in second . Dyck ju m ped o ut of the pit in third. " I got a little tight, and I'm fighting a cold," sai d Dyck. " I just made a little bobble an d both the Voh land brothers got by." Dyck kept th e Voh lands in sight, but wh en the checkered flag came out, T yson took the win by three bike len gth s over Tallon, wi th Dyck about 10 length s back in th ird. Fourth went 10 Nelson and ro unding out the top five was Trevor Meagh er. The start of the second moto again saw Nelson with the ho leshot, Bu t just, like in the first mota, hi s lead lasted less than two turns as he was first passed by T allon Vohland and then by Pat Ben nett. T yson Vohland held fourth through the first lap. At the end of lap one, Ben nett crashed and turned second over to Nelson. Bennett got up and underway in 10, but was way off th e pace of the leaders. Tyson passed Nelson heading into the pit 10 take over second and immediately set hi s sights o n li ttle bro ther T allon. Nelson man aged to hold thi rd for the next four laps before being passed by Larry Wosick, wh o had moved up from sevent h . Once clear of traffi c, the Voh lands set a blistering pa ce and pu lled away fro m everyone. Fo r the next severa l laps th ey were never separated by more than three bike lengths and sometimes were side by side. Neith er rider could get th e upper hand, and it appeared as if Tallon would be the winner. Bu t T yson 's cha nce for a pass came at the top of the finish line hill just befor e the checkered flag . "Tallon slid a bit in the tu rn and I just kep t it wide o pen around th e ou tside," said Tyson. " We were side by side comi ng down , but I ha d the line and Tallon had no choice but to back off or take us both O UI." T all on said , " We have an agreement. We don 't take each other out, no matter what." Once around Tallon, T yson he ld on to the lead for the final lap and took the check ered flag an d the win. Follow in g Tallon was Wosic k in th ird, Nelson in fourth and Meagher rounded ou t the top five. Dick didn't get a good start and was back in eigh th on the second lap , then had problems la te in the race and dropped back to fin ish 11th. Wh en the gate dro pped for the first 125cc Pr o moto, Dyck flew off the start hill with the lead. Several riders were in vol ved in a fig h t over seco n d, including Meagh er, Nelson, J oe Bruce and T yson Vohl and. By the end of lap two, both Nelson and Meagh er went do wn and Tyson blew by Bruce for second. For the next two laps Tyson clos ed onto the rear whee l of Dyck. Then at the start of lap four, Dyck appeared to let T yson by for the lead, wh en he looked over his shoulder and T yson j ust motored by. " I too k a bad line and slid out and he just went right by," sai d Dyck. . " I set him up a co up le of corners in advance and he had no p lace to go at that point," said Tyson , who had the lead and Dyck on h is tail fro m that point on . Whi le T yson and Dyck ba ttled for the lead , some distance back a du el ra ged over third between Todd Nelson, Bru ce and Bill y Mercer. The three riders battled all th e way to the finish line, with th e ou tco me undecided until the last turn. Wh en the checkered flag came ou t, Vohland had th e win and second place went to Dyck. Thirdpl ace changed hands three times in the last three turns, but Nelson was ab le to sneak to the inside of Mercer on the fin al turn to take the position. Mercer took fourth with Meagher mak ing a last-ditch cha nge into fifth . Mota two saw Danny Nelson grab the holeshot foll owed by T allon and Tyson Vohland then Dyck in fourth. Danny Nelson made a mistake and allowed the Vohland brothers to get around h im. T all on kept th e lead for the en tire rno to, with T yson kn owing that an other $3000 from Yam ah a was h is for j ust stayi ng in second and securing the overall victory. Wh ile the two bro thers were far ahea d, Dyck pu t pressure on Danny Nelson for third, bu t Nelso n wouldn 't cave in and Dyck, unw illing to take any unnecessary chances and possibly go down, decided to ma intain fourth place to the finish. The battle over fifth saw four riders circle the track in close formatio n. When th e checkered flag came ou t, Mercer had control of the positio n wit h Terry Fowl er, Meagher, and J on Nelson close beh ind. In the 250cc Novice class, Kevin Wise led every lap of both motos. Chuck Brad sh a w, John Turnell a nd Dan Barnett ra n close to th e front with Barnett grabbing second at th e fin ish . A third-place finish behi nd Shawn McDonald in rna to two was good enough to give Barnett second overa ll.
