Ezra Lusk (1l7) won the 125cc Pro class while Vince DeVane (106) finished fourth overall and captured the.series championship. Freddi e Mitchell (45) won every 125cc C class moto throughout the five-round Winter AMA Series. Joshua Valure battled with Mitchell at Gatorback. DeVane (left) and Ferry had their names added to the Freddie Epherem Memorial Trophy, given to the top Pro class riders in honor of the late AMA Pro referee. 22 Team Green Kawasaki /Barr 's / Shoei-backed Curry passed Jackson to wrap up second place at the finish with McElroy, Carl Vaillancourt and Carroll completing the top five. Pederson, who was the class runnerup for the series, said, " Vaill ancourt and I were going for it. I fell and it rang my chimes for a while. " The Vet Pro class ended in a shootout between rounds one a n d two winner Alan Andrew and rounds three and four winner Pederson. Andrew, however. took th e series crown ah ead of Je ff Hughes. " We had a good class," said Andrew. " Pederson , Ricky Palmer, Don Grahn , Bart Lu cas and Jeff Hughes were going for it every week." Barry Carsten won both 125cc A motos, but -the champ ion ship came down to a duel between Jim Neese and Brett Beauchamp. Neese, who finished third overall behind Carsten an d runner-up John Kitsch said, " Brett rode well today. I made some mistakes and was glad to win the series." In th e first 250cc A moto, Ferry open ed a co m m a n d in g lea d over Kitsch and Tommy Martin, but a flat tire slowed his charge and dropped him to 18th place. Kitsch took command and won the moto. Neese and Kitsch paced the start of moto two, but Ferry too k over on th e first lap and led for the mota wi n and a second series champ ionshi p. Neese said, " Kitsch and Ferry were pushing me hard. My arms pu mped and I had to let the m go ." The Team Green Kawasaki team of Matt Walker, Ricky Carmich ael, Kevin Windham and Robb ie Skaggs swep t the Mini championships. Walker had the closest race with Suzuki-mounted Donald Ledd y in th e 85cc (7-11 ) class. " I had to beat Ledd y in the fina l mota," Walk er said. "As I tried to pass him, we both went dow n. I was luck y to get up first and win." Anthon y Pocorobba , who led three classes early in th e series, salvaged a win in the 125cc Youth class. Pocorobba exp lained, " I had to borrow Andrew Desp ain's H onda. Mine was tras hed in a 125cc B crash. " Despain 's 125cc B class runner-up fin ish to Josh Latina gave hi m the class championsh ip , whi le Ricky Hampshire overtook Pocorobba to clai m the 250cc B overall an d title. Pocorroba commented, " I caugh t my foo t in Dustin Rounds rear wheel on a jump. It really hurts." Cindy Cole, wh o has driven back and forth from Massach usetts each week, edged Kim Sybert by one point for the Women's class champions hi p. Col e said , " I am looking forward to finishing high school and travelling to the GNC and Mammoth Mou n tain races this summer." Earl May borrowed a Honda CR500 from Jeff Ray and edged Kevin Foley by one po int for the +25 A class cha mp ions h ip , although Pede rson was .the overa ll winner for the day. Ricky Pa lmer, the +30 A champ was runner-u p to Pederson. Don Grahn won the +35 title, with a near perfect series record. Gary Peak dro pped in from Indiana to win the +40 class, but Barry Mayo preserved his title lead. Fredd ie Mitchell won every 125cc C class moto in the series, after mo ving up from Mini classes this past fall.
