the bon e. The more b lood you push ,
the faster it heal s.
. So you were trying to push as much
blood as you could?
Exactly. That's why I was bicycli ng So
soon. I'd peda l as long as I cou ld before
it wou ld star t hurting, then I'd stop.
Did the doctors th ink this was oka y?
Yes. I lost 10 pounds in the hospi ta l,
and I don't have IO pounds to lose to
begin with. I' ve struggled with my
weight because my metabolism is so
fast. I eat a lot an d it just seems to
go rig h t through me. I ha d to eat so
much I'd be tired and couldn't do
anything.
After three months I raced at Perris.
In the Camel Supercross Series you've
been running up front, eithe r in the
heats or the ma ins, bu t th en fading
back. Las t year you weren 't up front
as much when you were comp letely
health y. Why do you think you're
.
do ing so much better th is year?
Kawasaki has a good bike this year.
I probably wouldn 't be racing now if
I had the bike I rode last year.
You seem to be ridi ng like you did in
1990 when you were in contention for
. the champ ionshi p. Is it just the bike
that's helping you do so well?
I had a good bike in '90, and in '91
it didn't sui t my riding style. T h is year
I have a bike that suits my style. so
I'll go out there and ride. I'm about
70 percent right now. My leg is doing
good but I'm still stru ggling to get the
endurance back.
Having a good bike makes me want
to full y recover that mu ch more. I want
to thr ow a leg over that bik e. Last year,
I didn't reall y care to throw my leg
over it.
So part of the difference IS
psychological?
Yes, I'm in a better mo od . La st year
was hard becaus e people were al ways
asking me what happened sin ce I did
well in '90. I was going home and
working my butt off and still stru ggling. I couldn ' t get a good start, and
that's one of my stron g points. I
couldn't get the bike off th e line. It
was frustrating, and the more frustrated I.got , the worse off I was.
This year my mind is good.
Are you happy with your p erformances
so far th is year ?
I was nervous at Orlan do and didn't
ride up to my po tential, so I wasn't
happy. I psyched myself out. I was mad
all week lon g and went to Houston
and thought of it as just another race.
I don't like going somewhere and
givi ng the guy next to me a 30 percent
advantage. I'm giving them a q uarter
of a lap right whe n I pull up to the
starting gate.
Kawasaki did n 't even rea lly want me
to race. They almost didn 't let me race
at the start of the season, they th ought
I couldn 't poss ibly be read y.
I went to Houston with a different
attitude and rode well for I I laps until
I got tired. I ended up sixth and I was
happy.
Right now my goal is to improve
every week on th e enduran ce. The
speed is still there. I'd be panicking
if I had the endurance and not the
speed. Endurance is a lot easier to get
than speed . I feel I'm sitting alright.
Maybe in a month or so I'll be back
in there .
Do you think you can be in con ten tion
for the championship, or just be a
contender for a main even t win?
You can never tell, so much can
ha ppen. There are so many good riders
right now. Just making the main is
hard. I'm open minded. If nothin g else,
I want to win some races, and I
definitely think that's poss ible. I want
to get back to being healthy and put
all this behind me.
