As Bradsh aw tried to pu t distance
between himself and the pa ck during
lap three, Stanton, Bayle, and Cooper
wo rk ed th eir way a rou nd Keh oe.
Kiedrowski foll owed suit on lap fou r.
Stanton soon started to have prob lems of hi s own and was forced back
to th ird by Bayle.
" I go t off to a good sta rt, but go t
passed by a coup le guys on th e first
few laps and lost all my momentum,"
said Stanton. " I tried to pick it back
up, but Dam on was on the ga s. I'm
not going to make any excuses, they
were just riding a little better."
Stanton 's problems began to escalate
as Cooper zeroed in on the multi-time
champ ion.
" Cooper was riding reall y good and
made me protect my lines," said
Stanton.
" I caught Stanton, but couldn't do
anything, " said fourth place Cooper.
" Most of the lines on the track intersect
one another and that makes passing
tough. Thinking back, I wish I would
have tried a few things, but it's too
late now. "
Kehoe, meanwhile, ran in sixth
ahead of Matiasevich , Dymond, Larry
Ward and Everts. Kawasaki teammates
Jeff Ward and LaRocco battled in tensely for 11th.
The order quickly changed as Larry
Ward and Dymond tangled, sending
them both to the ground.
" I go t cross-rutted in a berm, and
tangled with Larry Ward , " said
Dymond. " I had a feeling that he was
going to pas s me anyway, bu t this (the
crash) didn't help me."
" Neit her one of us did any thi ng
funny," said Ward of the incident. "He
ma de a mis tak e, and I was too close
behi nd him to change lines."
Ward remounted in sixth wi tho ut
losi ng a posi tio n , but Dymond wasn ' t
so lucky, restarting his charge from
11 th.
LaRocco also went down late in the
race, injuring h is wrist in the process.
" I endoed into a tabletop and it
pitched me onto the fiat o n the other
side," said LaRocco, while holding an
ice pack on his left wrist. " I'm not
worried - I don 't think it is serio us
- but I probably won' t be too happy
tomorrow. "
Up front, Bradshaw allo wed his sixsecond lead to shri nk as he slo wed
down to rid e th e fi na l fe w la p s
cautio usly.
"I heard him (the anno uncer) say
that it was the last la p and it screwed
me up, " said Bradshaw, who whipped
hi s bik e sideways o n the whi te flag lap
in anticipation of the ch eckers. " It
kinda surprised me when I saw that
I still had one lap to go, but it was
no prob lem ."
Bradshaw circulated the course one
more ti me before p erf orming hi s
acrobatics ahead of Bayle.
"Things cou ldn 't have work ed ou t
much bette r," said Bradshaw. " I did
what I needed to do tonig ht, and that
was win ."
" My start wasn't too bad , but it took
too much time to work my way up,"
said Bayle. " I tried to catch up, but
there 's no way on this fast track."
Stanton crossed the finish line third,
Much like Bradshaw had don e in the
250cc final, McG rath contro lled the
tempo of the I25cc main event.
Damon Huffman gave chase to the
fast-starting McG rath until McGrath 's
T eam Peak /Pro Circuit H onda teamma te Buddy Antunez moved into the
runner-u p slot, That left Huffman to
conte nd with Tyson Vohland, Kyle
Lewis , and j immy Gaddis, th e winner
of the second heat race.
The pos itio ns remai ned the same
unti l the eigh th lap when Huffman
pu lled off the course with a seized
engi ne.
" My bike started slo wing down after
the first lap," said Huffman . " The rod
went o ut on th e face of the triple and
I barely made the seco nd jump. It was
scary."
Suzu ki support rid er Phil Lawrence
ca used som e exci te me n t midway
th rough the race as he charged from
10th. By the fifth lap he had worked
his way up to sevent h and then to
fourt h o n lap nine.
. H e then dogged Voh land for several
laps before making hi s move two laps
from th e finish . Voh land tried to
count er, but Lawrence maintained his
positi on and finished third.
" I had a really tough time trying to
pass Gaddis and Vo h land," said
La wrence, 20, of Ch erry Valley, California. " I started catching Antunez,
but I was getting tired - I think it's
because of the flu."
McGrath and his Skip Norfolktuned Honda CRl25 co llected the
checkers 15 secon ds ahead of Antunez.
Vohl and finished fourth behind Lawrence and in fron t of Gaddis, Dana
Wiggins and La nce Smail.
" It was pretty easy," said McG rath ,
who also won the first heat race. " I
felt real comfortable out there."
" It didn 't go how I wanted - I
wanted to win ," said Antunez. " Bu t
seco nd was good. I'm still hea ling from
a broken leg and I was j ust trying to
stay with jeremy. I was able to hang
