Carr, Filice honored at MPA

On hand to accept mo torcycle awards was
Chris Can for his efforts in win ni ng his founh
stra igh t 600cc National title and his tying Scott
Parker in the Camel Pro Series poi nts race.
The highligh t of the evening's festivites was
the all importa nt Athl ete of the Year award
which was presented to Modesto's Jim Filice
in honor of his return to racing from the horrific
Gil accident that ha ppen ed two years prior, to
.the da y, and his cha mpionship win ning effort
in the U.S. 250cc Grand Prix Series.
Filice thanked the ma ny members of the
media for his third award from this gro up . "I
will be raci ng in the Uni ted States in 1992.There
ju st wasn't eno ugh tim e to get a good G P effor t
together and so I will concentra te on defending
my title and try and put together a serious effort
toward a 1993 GP race ream. "
He also stated tha t he wou ld switch to Honda ,
adding. "I am just star ting to get the team
together to ra ce at Daytona and we will
defini tely be at Laguna Seca in Apri l."

Smi th grabbed the ear ly lead in the first
mota and rode uncontested to th e m oto win.
The real 'ra ce was for second, as Bob Chocas
and Cu rtis J ablonski spe n t the entire race
glued to each o ther. Chocas held off countless
charges to take th e well deserved runner-up
posit ion. Jack T rotter collected fourth over
Gary Pan gborn and Mark Ensign.. who had
'worked u p to six th in the 25-rider field after
getti ng stuck in the starting ga te.
J abl onski snagged the second moto holeshot but thi s time Ensi gn ga ted with everyo ne
else and was right o n his rear fend er. By the
end of lap one Ensign was in fro nt and pulling
away . First mo to wmner Sm ith sta rted seventh
and wor ked tow ar ds th e lea ders . Midway
through the mo to, En sign enjoyed a sixseco nd lead over J ablonskl . Bill Bradley and
Smith. Smith won the battle for second and
started to close in on Ensi gn , but tim e ra n
ou t and he ha d to settle for seco nd. Ensign's
second m oto win was good enough for th ird
overa ll behind winner Sm ith an d ru n ner-up
J ablonski.
