But someone forgot to tell that to Roth. . After startin g on row two, Roth passed Shane T rittler during the opening lap and appeared to be in a race of his own as he qu ickly broke loose from the pack and opened up a 75-yard lead. Naumec, Lewis, Gomm, Myers, Brooks, Thomson and Craig gave chase in that order, but lap after lap, Roth maintained his advantage. T he action hea ted up wh en Lewis , 21, of Simi Valley, Cal ifornia, forced his way aro und Naumec and set ou t after Roth. Lewis' charge didn't appear to be wor kin g until the seventh lap when Roth fell in a corner. As Lewis moved into the lead and quickly tried to establish a comfortable margin, Roth remounted in the back of the pack and eventually fin ished 11th overall. While much of the attention was being focused on the lead duo, Brooks and Craig worked their way towards the front and, on lap three, were gaining ·ground on Naumec. On lap eight, Craig worked hi s way arou nd Brooks and Naumec, then chased after Lewis. Craig pulled out all of the stops and pulled in on Lewis ' rear fender. The final lap saw a dash for the checkers with Lewis finishing in the lead pos it ion. Craig was a close second, . followed by Naumec, Brook s and Thomson . " It feels really good to start off the season th is way ," sai d the T eam Noleen Yamaha/ Oh lins/ Bridgestone/ Yamal ube/ ] T Ra cing/CeetiUn i Filters/ Pro Taper/PEC/loo%/Thou sand Oaks Yamaha/Hobo T owi n g/ The Racers Edge/Bob's Crazy Brush/CTi/ Scot t-backed Lewis. " I got a good break when Roth went down and th at was all I needed. " "If I would've had another lap, I could've won, " said Craig, wh o came away from the season opener with the championship series point lead. "I had to come from farther behind than he (Lewis) did , and there's not much tim e to pass." . Cr aig earned more p o ints than overall winner Lewis since the unique scoring system bases points on the final finishing position in th e main and riders from th e second row back earn passing points for each spot they move up from their original starting po sition. In the case of Craig, that sum was 76 which bettered Lew is' accurn ulation of 7I~ Brooks, who rode with an injured shoulder, left Anaheim in CN third with 62 poin ts. Results HEAT I: I.
