Craig Ellis fin ished fifth in th e Ope n P ro class at Mon trose MX. ha lfw ay po int, but th ey were left behind in th e cl osing laps whe n Edwards fou nd his rh ythm and closed in on Craig. Eckenbac h passed Kehoe on th e last la p to fin ish third, foll owed by Americans Kehoe, Brooks, Keith J ohnso n and Jones. In Sat urday' s final, Craig passed Co lli n Dugmo re for the lead in th e wh oops on lap two, but he fell at the end of the sectio n and dropped to sixth. By the time Dugm or e crashed ou t on lap six, Craig was back to second behind Kehoe, but he co uld do nothing to close the slender advantage Kehoe held. Craig went down again two lap s before the end, but he had built up such an advantage tha t he mai n tai ned second pl ace to finish well behind Kehoe. J ones fini shed third while Mik e Fisher, who missed th e first day du e to flight delays, passed Pedro Tragter late in the race to capture fourth. On the fin al day of com pe ti tio n, Jones led Kehoe at the start of the fin al. Edwards wo rked hi s way to third at the end of the first la p, but a lap later he slid into the ha y ba les. Kehoe follo wed Jones throughout the race an d wa ited until the fina l lap to try an unsuccessfu l o u tside pass on Jones, bu t h is second p lace gave him the o verall titl e. Craig cras hed ou t at th e halfway poi nt try ing to p ass Tragter for th ird in th e wh oo ps . Tragter's final cha llenger was Fish er, but Fisher lost fourth to Ecken bach not far from the finish lin e wh en Pekka Vehkonen , who was a lap down, lost con tro l on the ap proach to a tabletop j ump and took Fish er dow n as he fell back down the slope. Keh oe's on ly main even t victory cam e on th e second day of com petition. Ult racross Cham pion Michael Craig won th e first da y, while Mike J ones fin ish ed first on the fina l day. The tight a ren across-s tyle track mea nt that few riders had a troublefree ru n th rough the European-style program on all three days of competitio n. A q ual ifica tio n proced ure in wh ich just 12 riders transfered from th e heats to the semis created action that was hectic fro m the start of each race. E 28 Even the last cha nce races were packed with top riders. J on es had to be seeded into Friday's final by the promoters wh en he landed on Englis hma n Warren Edwards over a jump in a heat race after Edwards los t momentu m . They h a d bo th charged back nea r the front , but Edwards charged J on es out of the race at the end of a whoop section. J ones also cras h ed in the La st Ch ance Qualifier. Craig and Edwards were at th e front of the pack at the start of the main, but the Ameri can was to lead through out the race. " I couldn 't find the rhythm to follow Crai g when he p ut in som e really fast laps early," said Edwards, who was closed in late in the race wh en Cra ig bega n to fade and fin ished close behind the American . Larry . Broo ks stayed o n Edwards ' rear wh eel durin g the first few laps until he clipped a hay bale. A duel between Bernd Eckenbach and Kehoe carried the m clo se to Ed wards near the RAEFORD, NC, JAN 5 Kawasaki -mounted Craig Collie scored the overa ll win in th e 500cc Amateu r class a t the Winter Series opening rou nd, held at Mon trose Mot orsports Par k. Todd Hinso n stole the holeshot in the first rnoto , with Scott Turlington, David Ru ssell and T erry Bauco m in hot pu rsu it. Turlington immedia tely went into the lead , dropping H inson back to secon d. Russell made a pass on H inson to move into second ad Coll ie took over fourth. Turlington stretched out his lead over the field , but his bi ke suddenly fail ed and he had to drop out of the race. Ru ssell took over the lead, follo wed by H in son and Collie. At the finis h, it was Ru ssell , Hin son , Collie, Clayton Leac h and Je rry Rober tson. fn the second mOIO, it was Mar k Kiser with the holes hot, foll owed by Collie and Bau com . Collie moved in to the lead and cruised to th e win over Kiser, Russell, Leach and Robertson. Van Gibson shot of! the lin e like gang busters in the first moto of the Plus 25 class. Gibson wa s followed by Cra il; Ell is. Ron Jones, Keith Rivenb ark and Bn an McNeill . The riders con tinued in th eir starting order as Gibson put a lo t of space between him self and the field . Jones began to move up on Ellis , a nd passed him o n the front j um p, mo vin g McNeill into th ird. G ibso n too k th e win foll owed by Jones, McNeill , Ellis and Keith Riverbark . In th e second moto, Ellis snagged th e holesh ot , followed by Starnes , McNeill , Jon es and Gi bson. Gi bson moved up to second on the first lap , bu t took a fall. J on es moved into the lead and Starnes an d McNeill remai ned in second and th ird. Gibson was hustling to make u p time lost wh en he went down, but th ere wasn' t enough ti me left, Ron Jon es scored the win, followed by Starnes, McNeil, Gibson and Ellis. R.esults 0·65: 1. Bell was the first 10 strik e, as she m otored past Bettys o n th e famous Carlsbad up h ill , and set h er sig hts on Schaefer. Bell overt oo k Schaef er a few t urn s la ter a n d m o ved into th e p oin t position. Meanwh ile, lito rode like a man possessed and scooted int o fourth by the comp letion of lap one. lito forced his way past Beuys and Schaefer on lap three and began to close th e distan ce between him self and Bell. On lap five of the eig h t-lap rnot o, Zito powered past Bell and bega n to pu ll away . lito scored the moto wi n wi th a com for ta ble lea d o ver Bell , Schaefer, Justi n Lusian an d Bettys. Zito wa ited for no one at th e start of mo ro two, and grabbed the holes hot ahead of Bell, Bettys and Schaefer. lito enjoyed the lead for o nly a few turns, however, as he lost co ntrol and crashed in the fourth turn. "1 was pumped up because 1 finall y go t a good star t, then f lost it," said lito. Zito remo un ted in last pla ce. handing the lead to Schaefer. Bettys displaced Schaefer on 'h e first lap an d proceeded to lead the next few laps before tiring and dropping off the pace. Bell and lito hook ed u p in a knock dow n, dra g-out battle that carri ed them to the front of the pack , but it was lito who prevailed at the finish li ne. Bell scored her second runner-up finish of the day, whil e Schaefer cru ised home th ird ahead of Bett ys and Lusia n . " I' ve been off a bike for a long tim e," said l ito. "I'm just tryi ng to get my oId speed back." Hitoshi Machida rui ned the 250cc Junior class, as he roo sted away with bo th mota wins wi th relative ease.
