Properly done, yo u r bike ca n be put into co ld storage a nd ready for ac tio n co me spring. Improper ly stored bikes will suffer . ri n g damage , seized valves, ruined batteries and a mu ch shorter service life. Mo isture is the real culprit when it co mes to putting a motorcycle up for an exten ded period of time and th is sh ould be your first area of co nce rn. T op off th e fuel tank with a mixture of gas a nd a co m mercia ll y available fuel stab ilizer like Sta-Bil to preventthe tank from rusting and the gas from going bad whi le it sits . . Start the engine and run it until the flo at bowls run dry if .your bi ke has a petcock that ca n be sh u t off, or unscrew the float bowl drains ill th e bottom o f eac h carb and let all th e gas o u t. . Pull th e spa rk plugs and squirt a gen erous amo u n t of stra igh t 30W oil into each cylinder with an oil can , th en turn th e mot or o ver a few times to coa t th e cyli nder walls and valves. Replace the plugs and rem o ve th e battery. O btai n a battery charger that c an be set at 1/ 10 you r batter y' s rated am p hour ca paci ty. If you have a YBIO for i ns tance. it sho uld be. charged at I amp. Plug the cha rge r into o ne of th ose hom e sent ry timers tha t switch the lights o ff an d on to fool burg lars a nd set i t to charge your battery for two ho u rs ever y day . A ba ttery will lose 1.5% of i ts charge per day if left unch arged and o nce it goes fla t th e ' electro lyte level will drop exposing th e cell s to th e air a nd sulfation will soon ruin it. If possibl e, prevent the ba tter y fro m freezing by taking i t indoors. Put the bike on its cen terstand (if it has one) to keep the tires fro m flat , sp o tt i n g a nd sp ray some r u b ber p ro tectant o n th e tires , bei ng carefu l n o t to get a ny o n the trea d. This stuff is reall y slipper y and yo u will crash the fir st time you heel it over if yo u've sp rayed th e tread. Give th e chain a good lube and wax the paint. R ub :lown any ba re a lu mi n u m with metal pol ish to keep it from oxidizin g an d spray a little WD- 40 in th e swi tches an d cover with a cycle cover. Keep a fresh oi l filter and eno ugh oil o n hand to do an oi l change so yo u ca n du m p the o ld o il co me spring.
