Ev entual winner Billy Depriest explained, "I felt good on this track, waited my turn and scored a win." 6 Motocross The opening 125cc Expert Stock moto saw Richards, Anthony Paggio and Sheak lead at di££erent times before Jim Neese went ahead of them all and · stayed out front to the checkered £lag. Neese said, " I got a decent start and pushed hard. There were a lot of falls, and Sheak over-jumped a turn on the final lap to let me by. " Dement led Paggio and Sheak o££ the gate in moto two; but Sheak ruled the race after the second lap to score the victory. MX Fox/Pro Circuit/Dunlop/Rentha llAcerbis /Scott/Bell /Tsubaki / Powermist-backed Sh eak swept every lap of 125cc Expert Modified action, but the Kawasaki-mounted rider was upstaged by Dement in both 250cc Expert classes. Vince Devane, Neese, Paggio and Richards joined Sheak in ch a lle n gi n g Dement. Devane a n d Sh eak scored mot o win s, but Dem ent was the overa ll winner. In Pee Wee action, j osh ua Fausti no and Scott Perr y nai led moto win s, but Stewart came up the overall wi nner. Ricky Carmichael studied his competition in the 85cc (7· 11) class. Cole handily won both Women's class mOlOS ahead of Kim Sybert and Holbert. Cole explained, " I fell o££ the tabletop in the first moto and had to use the far sweeper to' catch Kim . I love a hard, fast track like this one." Ricky Palmer scored an upset win in the Plus 25 Expert class over Earl May. In 125cc B action, McCormick, Reynard, and josh Latina jumped into the Upton/Plott duel. Plott said after pushing his bike back with a failed ignition wire , " I could just see that $500 Honda contingency going away. " Plott split the 250cc B honors with Upton to stay in the cha m pionship hunt. On Thursday night, the riders and their families shared in a 30 turkey/ 20 ham Thanksgiving Day feast. There was even enough turkey left over for sandwiches which were handed out at the awards program on Sunday. Grand Prix The Grand Prix cours e originated in Gatorback's front pasture, toured the mo tocross track in reverse , and then altern ated between the surro unding pine brush woods and stadi um track, ending each lap at the scor ing barrels at th e motocross fin ish line. T he woods trails consisted of deep sand, were rough and du sty, and were a fitt ing fin al cha llenge in severa l close classes. T he Pee Wee class saw Chaz Northey lead from £lag to £lag in his fir st Ol ym pics. But in the cru cia l poin ts battle, Fau stin o edged Stewa rt by a fender in the fina l turn for the class championship. T he 45·minute 125cc Expert heat was a m ust- win situation for both Kip Bigelow (2) and Ron Jones had several close races in Plus 30 class competition. Dement -and Sheak. Sheak picked o££ early leader Bill y Schlag then alternat ed with je££ Curry for th e lead on lap four. Dement reeled in the two riders, passed CUtTy for second and closed o n Sheak with a lap to go. On the fin al lap, the two riders tangled, Dement fell and Sheak recovered for th e cha m pionship. Sheak said, " Dement tried to set me up on the outside. I held my line, we hit and lie went down," . In the 250c c Expert heat , Joel Dengler led a couple of laps, then Sheak con trolled all but th e final lap, when Steel boogied by for the win. Steel said, "I couldn't get the bike started. I finally ca ugh t up to Scott, noticed that he wasn't doubling (jumps) on the motocross track and passed him right there." In 85cc (7-11) action, Carmichael started in rnidpack and then wicked up his Barr's/MX Fox /PjllScott/ Renthal /TsubakiiShoei/SND-backed Kawasaki to pick o££ riders and go on to defeat the field. Windham, the 85cc (12-13) Champion, commented, "I got a good lead, started having fun, and ran at top speed o££ an S-turn into the woods. I was lucky to save a fall and keep the lead." No other race during the week was as close as the Skaggs/Maximo££ duel in the 85cc (14-15) class. Skaggs, riding with a bandaged hand, led until the final lap when 'Maximo££ cam e alive, moved by and preserved the win. Maximo££ explained, "I started , racing hare scrambles and it is my specialty. Robbie's hand bothered him , but he rode really hard and was tough to beat. I congratulated him on a great series . Earl May , the Plus 25 Expert Ch ainpi on, said, " It took me four trys to get my big Yamaha started. When I finally took the lead from Bigelow , I was through. I was sure glad to see the checkered flag. ' Bigelow scored the final victory in . the Plus 30 cla ss and dr ew praise from eventua l cham p Ron Jones. "That Mich iga n guy can fly in th is sand. H e bu rned me a live," sa id J ones. Plotts and Upto n each won a Gra nd Prix class and class cha mpionsh ip in the 125 and 250cc B classes. Up ton sai d, " I cou ldn ' t pa ss Damien in the I25cc heatun til a lapper slo wed h im down and helped me ou t," Ben Trask chased eventua l 500cc B cham p io n Mike Welsh , who struggled with sand in hi s eyes, bu t too k the Grand Prix win . Brown said, " I hung .in there, didn't get discouraged and it paid off."
