seriously as he topped a stro ng
field of American riders at th e ann ua l
O saka Supercross in N ish inomiya

Lechien , ba cked by T uf Racing,
worked up fro m a mediocre start to
pass Suzuki's Brian Swink late in th e
20-lap ma in and go on to score the
win. Swin k fini shed second and was
join ed o n th e p od iu m by Su zuki
teammate Steve La mson,
Three-time Osaka winner Dam on
Bradshaw went down in th e fir st turn ,
remounted and cras hed aga in to go a
lap down, th en di ced with Swink and
Lechien as they battled for th e lead .

Swink nailed th e hol esho t at the start
of heat o ne and held off the cha llenges
of Yamaha 's J eff Emig to take the win .

cras h, worked th ro ugh the pack to
finis h second and th ird , respectively.
DGY 's Jimmy Button wo n the first
sem i, and J eff Glass ra n away with the
victory in sem i two. After an impressive fireworks display, the riders were
read y for the main event.
Warren rounded the first tu rn with
the lead followed 'by Tichenor and
Swink. Le chi en was seventh while
Bradshaw tangled with Gl ass and went
down in the first turn. Half a la p later,
Bradshaw slammed th e wall in a
tunnel and knocked himself co m pletely o ut of contention.
Up front, Swink quickly took the
lead and motored away from the pack ,
which was headed by Warren, Lamson,
Emig, Tichenor and Lechien. On lap
three, Swink-had a comfortable lead
but had Bradshaw on his tail after
he la pped the Yamaha rider.

By th e halfway point, Lech ien had
worked up to third and was pressured
by Lamson for second until he go t by.
Lechi en then went after Swink, who
was still running with Bradshaw. On
lap 15, Bradshaw all o wed Lechie n to
pass, bu t a lap later Bradsh aw passed
bo th Lechi en and Swi n k. He then
pulled over and let the two riders fight
for th e lead .
Three laps from th e fini sh , Lechie n
was abl e to pas s Swin k for the lead
through a long whoop sectio n that was
giving man y riders probl em s a ll ni gh t.
Lechi en th en pulled away to score the
win. Swink settl ed into second and
crossed the line well ahead of La mso n ,
Emig, Warren and Tichenor.
'" felt , sho u ld have won ," said
Swink, " but , rod e too stiff and was
slo w th rough the whoops."
Bradshaw later a pologized to Swin k
for racing when he was a lap down,
but there was no a po logy to Lechien.
It didn't seem to matter, though , as
Lechien was obvi ously happy with hi s
performance.
"This is a feeling' haven't had in
a lo ng time," said Lechi en . I'd lik e to
win. one for (the fan s) back hom e,
too. "
