Lechien takes Osaka Supercross by storm By Andy Stacy OSAKA, JAPAN, NOV 10 . o n Lechien showed he is taking hi s co me ba ck to racin g very seriously as he topped a stro ng field of American riders at th e ann ua l O saka Supercross in N ish inomiya Stadi um. Lechien , ba cked by T uf Racing, worked up fro m a mediocre start to pass Suzuki's Brian Swink late in th e 20-lap ma in and go on to score the win. Swin k fini shed second and was join ed o n th e p od iu m by Su zuki teammate Steve La mson, Three-time Osaka winner Dam on Bradshaw went down in th e fir st turn , remounted and cras hed aga in to go a lap down, th en di ced with Swink and Lechien as they battled for th e lead . Th e O saka ra ce feat u red a n Am er ican-style form at with riders a d va nci n g directl y to th e m a in through heats, and for those who fail ed to qualify in a heat, there were a pa ir of semis. Swink nailed th e hol esho t at the start of heat o ne and held off the cha llenges of Yamaha 's J eff Emig to take the win . Hea t two went to La mso n over Eddie Warren and Darryl King, wh ile Bradshaw dom in at ed the third heat . Tu f Racing teammates Lech ien and Ron Tichen or, who suffered a slight co ncussion and bruised knee in a practice cras h, worked th ro ugh the pack to finis h second and th ird , respectively. DGY 's Jimmy Button wo n the first sem i, and J eff Glass ra n away with the victory in sem i two. After an impressive fireworks display, the riders were read y for the main event. Warren rounded the first tu rn with the lead followed 'by Tichenor and Swink. Le chi en was seventh while Bradshaw tangled with Gl ass and went down in the first turn. Half a la p later, Bradshaw slammed th e wall in a tunnel and knocked himself co m pletely o ut of contention. Up front, Swink quickly took the lead and motored away from the pack , which was headed by Warren, Lamson, Emig, Tichenor and Lechien. On lap three, Swink-had a comfortable lead but had Bradshaw on his tail after he la pped the Yamaha rider. R 26 By th e halfway point, Lech ien had worked up to third and was pressured by Lamson for second until he go t by. Lechi en then went after Swink, who was still running with Bradshaw. On lap 15, Bradshaw all o wed Lechie n to pass, bu t a lap later Bradsh aw passed bo th Lechi en and Swi n k. He then pulled over and let the two riders fight for th e lead . Three laps from th e fini sh , Lechie n was abl e to pas s Swin k for the lead through a long whoop sectio n that was giving man y riders probl em s a ll ni gh t. Lechi en th en pulled away to score the win. Swink settl ed into second and crossed the line well ahead of La mso n , Emig, Warren and Tichenor. '" felt , sho u ld have won ," said Swink, " but , rod e too stiff and was slo w th rough the whoops." Bradshaw later a pologized to Swin k for racing when he was a lap down, but there was no a po logy to Lechien. It didn't seem to matter, though , as Lechien was obvi ously happy with hi s performance. "This is a feeling' haven't had in a lo ng time," said Lechi en .
