In the first 250cc Pro rnoto, Billy J oe Merci er fired o ff the line with the ho lesho t as Johnny O 'Mara, Kehoe and Mik e Chamberlain filed in behind. Mercier led for o ne straight before O'Ma ra sw ept around Merci er to assu me the lead. Keh oe and Chamberla in charged by Mercier before th e firs t lap was complete and began a dogfight o ve r seco n d wh ich resulted in a number o f pass-backs until Keh oe finally moved aw ay for good near th e halfway mark. Keh oe soon closed to the rear fender o f O 'Mara but the former Supercross and l25cc National Champion co ntin ued to ride gracefull y a t the same pace. O 'Mara maintained the lead to th e ch eckered flag with Kehoe second a nd Chamberlain third. Buddy Antunez made a charge from last to finish fourth. O 'Mara pulled th e holesh o t in the second moto while Kehoe and Cham. berlain batt led for second. Keh o e eventually shook free of Chamberlain and set sail for O 'M ara, who enjoyed a th ree seco nd lead. Keh oe was q uick to reel in th e leader and shadowed O 'M a ra 's every move when he fou nd a li ne near the border o f th e track. Kehoe sto le the lead, a nd O 'M ara 's concentation seemed broken as he ' made a few mistakes that allowed Ke ho e to ope n a six- bi ke le ng t h advantage. O' Mara regrouped lat e in the ra ce and charged to with in two bike lengths of Keh oe, but was unsuccessful in sett ing up a pass. Brian Manley was close to leader Kehoe early in bo th rnotos , but Kehoe pulled away la te in both races. Manley eventually sett led for seco nd while Ch amberl ain and Dana Wiggins argued over third in each mo to. Ch am berlain capitalized on a seco nd -moto cra sh by Wiggins to get the nod for third. Damon Huffman clinched the class championship with a fifth-p lace fin ish . Sal Ugarte scored hi s first-ever win in the l 25cc Novice class after ta ki ng a co nvi nci ng secon d moto win. Charlie Vice wo n the first moto and was never challenged at any time during th e race. , But Vice suffered a front flat in the second mot o, which forced him out o f the top five as Ug arte stormed away to a wire-to-wire win. Kawasaki Team Green 's Mike Craig, who had already sewed up his second straight Ultracross Ch am pi onship, finished second in th e event which was held in co njunction with off-road truck a nd buggy racing. Two heats were run to determine the sta rti ng order of the main, with hea trace winners placed near the back of grid. In heat one. Craig a nd Iorrner Ul tra cross champ J im Holley kn ifed their way to th e fro nt. At th e finish, Craig had a wid e margin o f victory over H olley. while Shawn Wyn ne captured th ird over T revor Meagher a nd Du a ne Ben ner. Seven inches of s n o w ea r l y i n t he week h ad threa tened the even t, but temperatures in the low SOs and dustless con dition s m a de for a perfect day of ra cing. Darryl Wilson , the 1990 New Mexico number one plate-holder, led throughou t th e first loop o n his 500cc H o n da. At the pits, 250- mou nted Berry was a m ere five seconds back on adjusted time. A few miles i nto the second loop, Wilson was forced off-couse by an unexpected novice rider . The resulting tire/rock collision left W ilson wi th a b adly damaged rear wheel a n d a D N F. Be rry assumed the p hysica l lea d and never looked back. Th e Demi ng Cycle-sponsored rider fi nished the four loop race with a 3.5 minute lead.
