before. I would ask , 'Well, don 't you wanna do this?' and he 'd say no. 'Well, how 'bo ut this?' ' No pe' " In their first race aboard the new XR750, Durelle struggled to adjust to the motorcycle's chassis and finished a distant l-tth , but as the season progressed his results began to improve dramatically. In his most su ccessful season ever, Durell e only missed two main events, the Peoria TT a nd the fall Pomona Half Mil e. Durell e elected to stay home on th e weekend of th e Peo ria TT, and a dislocated shoulder thwarted his Pom ona effort. " I di dn't go to Peo ria," Durell e explai ned. " It seems like every time I go there, I end up leaving in the am bulance. O ver the years, I've suffered a co m pressed vertebrae, p unctured a lung, bro ken ribs, an ankle and a shoulder, all at Peoria. I th ink that I've h a d m o re than m y share o f injuries. Heck, I can' t even ge t health insurance anymorel " Atl13 pounds dripping wet , one can unders ta nd why Du rell e might be more vu lnerable to injuries while crashing a 300-plus pound motorcycle. "So meti mes my size is an advantage. but lo ts of tim es it's a disadvan tage," said Durel le, " It wo rks on the m iles, but I reall y get thrown around on the rou gh er half miles a nd short tra cks. I reall y hav e to fi nesse the b ik e. wh ereas o ther g uys ca n muscle i t around." " Fines se" is a word that describes Durell e's rid ing style well. It 's not often that yo u will see him mak e a n overl y-a gg ressive pas s. : o r take an unnecessary chance. " When I was yo ung, my idol was Randy Goss. He was my kind of rider; a nice guy and clean racer," said Durelle. "I'd rather wait for someone to make a mistake. there's no sense in trying to force one. I'd rather out-fox someone." " O ne thing I'm proud of, is that I've ' never put an yo ne down. But then again, every time I've ever bumped someone I've been the one to crash," he added with a laugh. Durelle's off-track personalit y parallels his on-track manners. The softspoken Ed in a, Minnesota, resident keeps to h imself a t the races , but is loo ked upon as one of the " n icest guys on the circuit." "I've never had a real 'I'm great' atti tude - I'm no t tha t type of person. Bu t, hey, ma ybe tha t's why I didn' t do so good a t firs t," said Du rell e, " I can' t j us t tell myself 'Scott Parker is a fish , you're bett er," I have to prove it to myself first. "As the year has gone o n , though, I' ve gained a lot of co nfide nce , a nd I feel tha t I can go just as fast as a ny of those guys," Durel le said. "Looki ng back, I wish th at I had taken a different outlook o n racing and done what I' ve . do ne soo ner." No w that the season is over. the team of Du relle, Donahue and Wilhem y p lan to pUl their head s toge ther to find a way to make 1992 an even bett er year. " We started th e year with hopes of a to p 10 fini sh, a nd we finish ed eig h th," said Durell e. " No w my goal for next year is to win a National , I think I'm ready. . . That's a real elite group - National winners - and I want to be a part. of it." 01 ~ o e-r l-< (1) ..0 8 (1) > o Z SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO SACRIFICE EVERYTHING TO SACRIFICE NOTHING For a personal viewing and demonstration contact your nearest Bimota dealer: CONNECTICUT Connecticut Motor Works NEW JERSEY Cycle Connection june Bar Ln.
