Randy Hawkins, the 1990 National Enduro Champion, equalled Hrehor's 28 point score but lost out at the tie breaker and fini shed second overall. The 10 degree temperature (a record low for this time of year) was accompanied by br isk winds that dropped the chill factor well below the zero mark and mad e riding the 117 mil es of frozen turf an exercise in agony. And, to compound th e frigid digit scenario, th e cold sna p froze th e ground but not the flowi n g water in the deep creek crossings. Team Suzuki's Hawkins, showing the class of a champ ion, comp limented the club: " I tho ugh t the Bush Poppers did a gret job but they can 't con trol th e weather. I had a lot of fun excep t at the start of the run. I did a big crash righ t off the start . I bent my bars and brok e my front fender off. I don't know wha t happened, if I got crossed up in a rut or wh at, It shook me up and it took a little tim e to get going again and I dropped a minute to Jan at the th ird check. We rode the same the rest of the way excep t Jan beat me at the tie-breaker." In answers to questions abou t Jan, Hawk in s said, "Jan carne over from his native Povazska Bystri ca, Czechoslovakia, seven weeks ago for Suzuki, to ride the American enduros and if he can win, he'll probably be part of their team next year. He 's going horne next Wednesday and I think we'll most likely see more of Jan next year. I don 't care tha t much abo ut rid in g th e road anyway but today it was pure misery. We were abl e to sta y on tim e excep t for check three and four . They had three resets and that got us back on tim e and made th eir hot checks work ." Getz fini shed fourth overall. They were frozen and slick with zero trac tion. If you got crossed up you fell down. Som e of th e areas, because th e fr ost isn 't deep ye t, were broken through and the traction was good but there weren 't too many of those. I don 't think an ear ly or late number mad e that much difference toda y." . The' cold weather laments stopped with T eam Husky's Bill And ersson.
