eSUPERCROSS e Masters of Motocross series: Round 3 For 10 laps Ward deni ed the French ma n , bu t Bayle made a mid- race charge that put him ahead. Once out front, Bayle gra du all y moved clear for a sixsecond win whi le Ward went u nchallenged in second to the checkered flag. Stanton , who had started in Bavle's wheeltracks, finished third, nearl y 10 seconds beh ind Ward . Fourth-place McG rath was th e on ly rider to avoid being lapped by Bayle. McGrath achieved this by a narr ow margin after a sp irited ride thro ugh the pack fro m a 10th- place start, and the crowd took h im to its heart for his spec tacular antics over the big jum ps. Seven th after four laps, McGra th mo ved up a nothe r position when Kiedrowski fell just before the halfway p oin t. McGrath was also com ing under pressure from Cooper as they both passed Buehl th ree laps later. McG rath th en needed another few laps to catch and pass Lechien , who was then lapped by Bayle but held off Cooper to finish fifth. CN . o '" CN lo-< V ..0 8 v ;> o Z Results Jean-Michel Bayle swept both days of racing in Barcelona and has lost only one race through th ree Masters events . BarcelonaSupercross falls to Bayle By Alex Hodgkinson BARCELONA, SPAIN, NOV. 2-3 he Jean-Michel Bayle Winning Mach ine marched on at the Palau Saint J ord i Ol ymp ic Stadium. Even the additional competition in the form of l25cc National Champion Mike Kiedrowski and Jeff Stant on were powerless in an at temp t to preven t ano ther dominating exhibition by the 22-year-old Fre nc h man for 22,000 spectators. With Wo rld Champions St efan Everts and Geo rges Jobe off raci ng th e Ant werp Supercross in th eir Belgian homeland, Bayle had little sup port from his fellow Europeans against the l ~-strong American cont ingent . T he only other European to make the fin al on both days of the two-da y event was Dutchman John Van den Berk. Not that Bayle needed much help. Bayle set the fastest time in th e qualifying hea ts and European-style semi -finals, then .twice led rival Larry Ward to the fini sh line in each mai n event. Bayle's American Honda teammates Stan ton and Jeremy McGrath dominated the other heats and semi, th eir only real opposition coming from Van den Berk as Jeff Ward was again T 16 tro ubled by his ankle inj uries, Ano the r po ten tial rival , Guy Cooper, had an up-and-down eveni ng and was forced to qualify for the main throug h the second-chance races. McG ra th got the holeshot in the 22lap main event, but neither th e l25cc Western Regional Supercross Champion nor runner-up Cooper, inevitably somewha t tired in his fifth race of the even ing. cou ld resist Bayle for lon g. Within a couple of minutes Bayle had swep t to th e front and majestically ma rc he d on to a 22-second wi n, lappin g u p to fifth pl ace. Larry Ward foll owed Bayle past Cooper and inherited second place when McGrath crashed back to seven th place in the early stages of the race. Stanton advan ced rapid ly fro m a seventh-place start to challenge fourthp lace Kiedrowski, but a fifth-lap collis ion pushed him back to sixth beh ind Ron Lechie n. Lech ien, a winner in Barcelon a last year, spoiled his chan ces of a top finish when he cras hed j us t before th e halfway point. Stanton regained fifth on ly temporarily as a broken chain gu ide forced h im to retire on lap 11. T h at left Larry Ward, Cooper and Kiedrowski in a fu tile chase of Bayle to the finis h, w h ile McGrath advanced to fifth at the fin ish. Mike Fish er fini shed sixth ahead o f Jeromy Bueh l, who had crashed on the firs t la p. Jeff Ward fin ished eigh th ahead o f Lech ien , w hile Va n den Berk comp leted th e top 10 desp ite three crashes. . Su nday saw little cha nge in th e pattern and Bayle was aga in unbeaten througho ut the program. Few of the big nam es needed a second chance to qualify for the main. th e exceptions being Buehl and Larry Ward. A broken clu tch forced Ward out of his semi as he cha llen ged Stanton for the lead. Neither Buehl nor Ward had any difficul ty winnin g their rescue races and the pa ir were the first two out of turn one in the main. Larry Ward grabbed the hol eshot ahea d of Buehl with Bayle th ird at th e end of the first lap. A mistake by Buehl dropped him to fifth on lap two, while Ward wasn't about to give up the lead without a fight and it was to be Bayle's toughest race sin ce a moto in th e Fren ch opening round of the series.
