E ITOR'S D MEGAP HONE By Paul Carruthers Oy, do I love endurance road racing. Maybe it 's the way it just goes on and on, a nd on. Three hours. Come on, AMA, it 's n ot long eno ugh . Give me 24, 48, 72 hours . The more the merrier. And the ra ces are even more fun if you 're assigned to cover one for this newspaper. I'm sti ll having trouble getting the grin off my face, and I haven't cov er ed one in months. I love th e pit stops. This is the human drama of athletic cornp eti- , ti on that ABC's Wide World o f Sports speaks of in their prom os. There 's nothing like watch ing a well-executed pit stop: You know , ri der A pulls into th e p its fo r a qui ck splash of ga s a nd a r ide r ch a n ge; , mec ha n ic A, who forgot the gas ca n , ru ns to th e truck to p ick one u p ; ri der B, me anwhi le, is ea rin g a hot dog i n th e snack bar and has to finis h q uickl y, pull on hi s leath ers and run to th e a id of ride r A. And th e tea m nam es. Are there better in a n y sport? The AMA series ha s Humans a n d Mad Dogs a nd more Dutchmen than H olland ; th ey' ve got Ma gic, 2 BS, Rice Burners, Toomer s, H orn Blo wers a nd that la w firm M ye rs & Pru ssia n o . T he re' s Poor Bo ys and Swin e Dudes and I Ca n J a m. And WER A is a lso c reative. They 've got Team L ips, Belc h fire, Pasta, Three Men and A Bike and Barely H u ma n . U n fortunately, they don't have a ny Barel y Du tch men ; I guess that would be a Belgian . And you don't see any Indians boycotting our sport. There 's not a Braves or an Indian or a Chief in th e bunch. These fin e men and lady endu ran ce racers are also a grateful bunch. You ne ver hear them co mplai ning about our co vera ge. Not once do we hear the se words from endu ra nce racers. No, w e nev er hear : " Yea h , I wanted to tell you that somebody screwed up the endurance coverage fro m Any Track U.S.A." And the list o f my sponsors was messed up, too. It 's not a Mo m and Dad-sponsored Yamaha it's a Dad and Mo m -spo n sored Suzuki ." They n ever co m plain. ' Bu t if they do , I'm ready for it. I'll just open a fi le and start writing.
