"- CRESP~ If you've been 'to the United States Grand Prix or the American round of the World i Superbike Series in the past three years, you probably already know about lames Crespinel. , His commissioned work includes portraits of Mikhail Gorbachev, Martina Navratilova, Michael Jordan, Bria n Bosworth and Steve Largent, in addition to those of James Dean , : Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe. . : He is quickly becoming one of the most sought after competition artists in the United States. Many world class riders themselves own original oil paintings by Crespinel and now lith ographs of his works are available for both the collector and enth usiast alike, through Cycle News Products . EDITOR'S MEGAPHONE '---""'!: By Jack Mangus am n . That was th e first word I mutt er ed upon h earing that Carroll Resweber is a fugiti ve. That's ri g ht, th e legendary Carroll R eswe ber. Th e four-t i m e Grand Na tional Cham p io n . T he rider who was on h is way to a fifth straig h t ti tl e when a ho rr ific acc ident ended his racing career. Yes, Carroll Resweber, is a wanted man. I heard the sad news while attempting to ge t in contact with Resweber. I wanted to get h is reaction to Scott Parker eq ualling his four straight ti tles . Knowing he had worked at H a rl ey- Da vid so n for many years foll owing his racing career-ending acciden t - incl uding a stint ' as a mech anic in the racing department, I wo ul d no rmall y have ca lled H arl ey first. But I didn ' t. I ca ll ed a nother form er G rand National Champion, Gary Ni xo n , hopin g to co me up wit h R esweber ' s home phone number. That 's when I heard the bad news . " Yo u hadn 't heard about it? H e got busted last win ter on some kind of drug ch arge and after he posted ba il, he j ust spl i t." A H arl ey-D a vidson sp okes m a n confi rmed th a t R esweb er wa s a wanted man. And so Ca rr oll Resweber is gone. On the lam. A fugitive from justice . This isn't th e first time he's had a brush wi th the law and he o bviously thought th at this time justice would have meant exten ded jail time. And a free sp irit like Resweber co u ld n' t face that. O n e form er ra cer had th is to say about Resweber: " Yo u d idn't race to beat him, you raced to bea t the other g uys. When he unloaded his bike at a tra ck , you kn ew that unless something on the bike broke o r i t wa sn 't working right, the race wa s h is." Resw eber won th e G rand National title four years running, 1958-1961. He scored h is first Grand National Championship victory on June 16, 1957 at th e Columbus (O h io) Half Mile and his 19th and last on August 25, 1962 at th e Santa Fe Short Track in H insdale, Illinois. Three weeks after winning at Santa Fe, Resweber was involved in a multi-bike crash at the Lincoln (Illinois) Half Mile. He suffered multiple injuries and spent a considerable amount of time recuperating. Left with a mangled arm, his racing days were over. Bart Markel went on to win the title in '62 ; but despite being eliminated from the Lincoln results and missing the final three races of the series, Resweber fin ished second. The last time I saw Resweber, he was partying. Part yin g hard. And if he never does resurface, I'll remem ber him the way I last saw h im - with a smile o n his face. I'll also remember him as arguably the greatest dirt track racer of all time. Carroll Resweber is now competing in th e toughest race of his life - a race from the law, a race that few win. Perhaps I shouldn't say this, but I mean it : Good luck, Carroll. or D *FEATURED EDITIONS* EDDIE LAWSON Some call him the greatest rider who ever lived.
