The seco nd semi belonged to Bayle, and Van den Berk was given second when Schmit, who had passed th e Dutchman with just over a lap to go , fell down. Bayle said that he hoped the final would be more exciting for th e spectat ors, and indeed it was for a few laps. Bayle got a poor jump and was in sixth pl ace behind leader Manneh , Larry Ward , Voh land, Everts an d Moore at th e end of the first wh oop section. By the end of the first lap Bayle was up to third, and Manneh co u ld offer no resistence to either the Frenchman or Larry Ward. For the next three laps Larry Ward fended ofL-Bayle's attacks, and after being passed for the lead he even stayed lose to Bayle until the halfway point. In the second half of the 20-minute race Bayle pulled clear and finished 40 seconds ahead of Wa rd. Cooper trie d to foll ow Bayle early in the race and went down in the whoops on lap th ree. After restartin g nearly a lap down, he rode a superb ce to nearly snatch sixth from Sch mit t the checkered £lag as bo th ended the ce a lap down. Everts needed seven laps to displace o hla nd for th ird, but on the next lap th ri ders fell in a tight turn to ha nd the position to Van den Berk. Five laps rom the end Everts once again passed oh land fo r fourt h , but he couldn 't tch Van den Berk before the end of the race. O n Sunday, Schm it controlled the first heat from the front as Everts , Georges Jobe and Vehkonen crashed in the first turn. Everts made a fabulous comeback to finish a few seconds hind winner Schmit and runner-up Vohland. . BayIe had a tough time getting by Cooper to win the second heat, while Jeff Ward held off Larry Ward to win heat three. Bayle was again sovereign in the first semi, while Everts came through the pack to snatch second from Larry Warn. . The second semi saw Americans in the top six positions u ntil Matso n crashed and let Veh konen into the final behind Cooper, Jeff Ward, Vohland, Jerom y Buehl and Moo re. Cooper grabbed the holeshot a t the start of the main, but Bayle was in his tracks and it seemed inev itable that it would o nly be a matter of time befor e the Fren chman took the lead. 1.5 usual, Bayle chose th e whoops for his pass, which came on the fifth of 20 laps. He str etched out a 25-second advantage over the remai ning circuits as Cooper rode a hectic race. Vohland broke clear of the pack and surprised Cooper with a pass at the halfway point. Cooper was so su rprised that he ran off th e track and dropped to fourth behind a charging Larry Ward. Cooper wasn 't finished, however, and with five laps to go he repassed Ward and another two laps he regained second from Vohland. Vohland held on to finish third behind Cooper, while Ward was fourth, and they were the only ones not lapped by Bayle. T h e Euro pea n con ti ngent h ad crashed out early in the race. Veh konen went do wn o n a step -up jum p , while Everts, who had cha rged pa st Matson, Schmit and Jeff Ward to chase Larry Ward , went over the ba rs at the same j ump 'o n the following lap. H e was too badly shaken to continue. Matson, who had qualified for the main despite two slips in the Last Chance Qualifier, rode a smooth ra ce and it wasn't until the last lap that ., CX") ~ ....
