DAYTONABEACH, FL, ocr. 20 ripp Nobles thou ght he was in the wrong place coming ou t of the chicane on the last lap of the Harley-Davidson T win Sports race at Daytona. He thoug h t he sho uld be leading, let pursuer Scott Zampach draft by him, then catch his draft and fly by a t the flag, But when Zampach passed him entering the chicane, th e plan cha nged. "I came up a bit sho rt on sh u tting him o ut in th e ch ican e. So, I had to foll ow hi m th rou gh a nd hold off until just the righ t p lace to get by so he couldn't dra ft back pas t and take the win," Bartels' H -D-backed Nobles said. " I had to wai t until the very last minute and go to the bottom of the race track to make Scott have to go high if he wanted to get back aro und. What reall y won it for me was the long run to th e flag here. On ce I got past Scott, I figured I could win, but I kept an eye on him an yway." Nobl es' offical margin of victory over the Tilley Harley-Davidson of Zampach was .090 seconds at the end of the sevenlap, 25-mile race, round 10 of th e Twin Sports series. The race took the Georgian 16:04.510 minutes to complete at an average speed of 93.013 mph, Nigel Gale was a close third on the second Bartels' entry with Jam es Leslie (Moromey's Cycle) holding off number one plate ho lder Randy Texter (Lancaster H -D) for fourth. Sin ce th e second race at Road Atlanta, Zampach and Nobles have sp lit all of the win s with Zampach taking a on e point lead, 183 to 182, into the final round a t Miami on November 10. Zampach took the lead at the start, head ing a four -rider pack that quickly put ground on fifth place. Nobl es, Texter, and Gale followed, with Leslie just off the pace, and the top four swapped positions severa l tim es a lap. No one seemed to have an advantage, thou gh Nobles said in one place he was at a disa dvanta ge. _ "Sco tt's bik e (a '90 mod el 883 Spo rtster) has a four -speed transmission , where Nigel a nd I have ("91 mo de l) fivespeeds. T he four-speed bik es come out of the ch ica ne a lot better th an o u rs," said Nobles, w h~se engi ne was b uilt by Vic Fasola. Zampach led a t the end of the first a nd second laps , Nobles taking the lead at the end of the third, Leslie nearl y crash ing going into the first turn, slowing Texter beh ind him, As the halfway £lags were shown at the end of the fourth lap, the top thr ee of Zampach, Nobles , and Ga le had over 3.5 seconds on the Leslie-Texter du el. T Zampach said he could feel the pair behind him. "It was like p u tting the brak es on havin g two bikes drafting off me," he said. "I was losing about 800 rpm o n top end and with these bikes, that's a lot." The order was the sam e at the end o f the fifth and sixth laps - Zampach, Nobles, Gal e - a nd didn 't change as they headed into the chicane on the final lap . Exiting the chicane for the final time, Gale didn't get a good a drive as the leaders and lost their draf t, and a cha nce for the win . It came down to one final drafting man euver, Nobl es slipp ing by as he a nd Zampach came ou t of the east banking for the run to the flag. Afterwards, Zampach found himselE secondgu essing his own stra tegy. " O n the last lap, they were so close and Tri pp worked the draft reall y well ," he said, "It was kind of a gu essing game at that point on the last lap as we came to the finish. I gu ess I could have slowed so I was third ou t of the chicane and then, ma ybe, I would have been the on e drafting past to win, That' s racing. " Gal e said , "I gu ess I had the best seat in the house back there in third. It was quite a race. Scott and T ripp are running for the title, so, in the end, I' figured I'd stay in there, bu t let them race for the win if I couldn't be a factor." The day before the Twin Sports race, the sam e racers competed in the AMN CCS U.S. Twin Sports race and, though the margin of victory was slightly larger, .460 seconds, the quality of racing was no different, though the results were. Zampach took the win in Saturday's race, not allowing Nobles to do to him what he would do the next day, The lead belonged to the Georgian for most of the race, Zampach and Gal e in his shadow, T exter a second back. Nobl es led across the line on the wh ite flag lap, Zampach taking the lead on the final lap and holding it through th e chi can e. They exited onto the banking. taking it high up to the wall, .with Zampach holding the advantage across the lin e. "I really had to keep my momentum up, but it seemed like Scott got just a bit more drive out of the chicane on the last lap and that was that," Nob les said, Gale finished third with Texter a close fourth. f,N Results H·D TW SPRT : I.
