"T he bik e finally quit in a canyon three miles out. I took the spark plug out and saw tha t it was coated with dirt. I changed it and tried for awhile to start it but it just wouldn't go . Then I tried to push it up the hill but it was too steep. I finally bump started it after 30 minutes by going back down the hill. Thank God there was only an obs ervati on check aft er that. " Hines felt th at the enduro was won and lost in the first 4 I. 7 miles-long section. " I feel like I wo n it in th e mornin g because I attacked fro m the start, " Hin es said. " I rode hard and I rode loose. I kept pushing it so that I cou ld relax in th e afternoon. The wi n puts me in a good po sit ion to win the titl e. Jeff (Russell) had some m isfortune here. I plan on winnin g the last two and th e titl e." Kudla was the runner-up, losing to Hines on th e tie-break ers, and he blamed a tough section called th e " Dead Forest" for hi s loss. " My arms went away and I just couldn't get it go ing," said Kudla. The section he was referring to measured over two miles in length and featured the tightest tree sections of th e entire course. "Still, this is the best finish of my life," added Kudla. " I high-pointed once as a B rider, but that's nothing compared to this." Neilson was third overa ll with 41 points, just one less than the leaders. The Husqvarna WXE250 rider said that this marked th e second year in a row that he nearly overalled the Buckhorn.
