most of hi s riva ls' departure by keeping
mistakes a t a minimum and dropping
as few po ints as po ssibl e. However, the
last three mil es were nearly disasterous
for Hines.
" I took in a lot o f dirt while riding
the last section," said Hines, who is
backed by Su zuk i, Shoei, MSR, BelRay, Scott, Factory Connection, Metzeler, Sprocket Speciali sts, Renthal,
Uni-Filter, Pro-Cicuit, Acerbis and
Cycle Gear. "T he bik e finally quit in
a canyon three miles out. I took the
spark plug out and saw tha t it was
coated with dirt. I changed it and tried
for awhile to start it but it just wouldn't
go . Then I tried to push it up the hill
but it was too steep. I finally bump
started it after 30 minutes by going
back down the hill. Thank God there
was only an obs ervati on check aft er
that. "
Hines felt th at the enduro was won
and lost in the first 4 I. 7 miles-long
section.
" I feel like I wo n it in th e mornin g
because I attacked fro m the start, "
Hin es said. " I rode hard and I rode
loose. I kept pushing it so that I cou ld
relax in th e afternoon. The wi n puts
me in a good po sit ion to win the titl e.
Jeff (Russell) had some m isfortune
here. I plan on winnin g the last two
and th e titl e."
Kudla was the runner-up, losing to
Hines on th e tie-break ers, and he
blamed a tough section called th e
" Dead Forest" for hi s loss.
" My arms went away and I just
couldn't get it go ing," said Kudla.
The section he was referring to
measured over two miles in length and
featured the tightest tree sections of th e
entire course.
"Still, this is the best finish of my
life," added Kudla. " I high-pointed
once as a B rider, but that's nothing
compared to this."
Neilson was third overa ll with 41
points, just one less than the leaders.
The Husqvarna WXE250 rider said
that this marked th e second year in a
row that he nearly overalled the
Buckhorn.
ISD E rider Kelby Pep pe r was ninth
overall; four th in the AA div ision.
Scott Myers thumped his way to third
in the Four-Stroke A class.
