Cancilla took pa rt in ama teur and th en professional races foll owing WWII and operated a Triumph/Bultaco dea lership ou t of the house in whi ch he was born. Two-time Worl d Speedway Champi on Bruce Penhall will be inducted into southern Ca lifornia 's Orange County Spo rts Hall of Fame on October 29. Penha ll, who is now 33 and the father of three children, makes his hom e in Laguna Hills in Orange County. H e wo n- his World Ch ampionships in 1981 and 1982, and announced hi s retirement from speedway racin g th e n ight he won his second title. Penhall then p ursued a career as an actor, sta rri ng in the TV series , CHi Ps. He Los P bill gets Senate hearing_ adres bill to designa te nearl y 400,000 acres as wildern ess in an area between Monterey and Santa Barbara, California , received its first Sena te hearin g on Oc tober 17 in the Public Lands, Nat ional Parks and Forests Sub commi ttee, according to the Ameri can Motorcyclist Association. T he bill, designated as SI225 and co-spo nso red by Ca lifornia Sena tors j ohn Seymou r and Alan Cranston, would set aside 398,800 acres as wilderness in the Lo s Padres National For est. The Senate hearing, whi ch was chaired by Seymour, saw eigh t different witn esses, includin g Cranston, give testimony concern ing the impact of the bill. Kim H athaway testified o n beh alf of th e Cal ifornia Off-Road Vehicle Associati on (CO RVA), and lobbied persuasivel y in an effort to preserve a po pu lar rid in g area known as the j ohnston Ridge Trail. " We beli eve o ur request to keep the trail open is reasonable when you consi der that it represents only o ne acre of land compared to o ver 400,000 acres of wildern ess," said Hathaway. The U.S. Forest Service has successfu lly managed the j ohnston Ridge T rail for the pa st 30 years, and Associate Deputy Chief Larry Henson said that th e .agency could con tin ue to do so if Co ng ress deletes the riding area from the bi ll's wilderness territory. Sen. Frank .Murkowski (R-Alas ka) joined Seymour in raising concerns abo ut the po ssibl e closing of the j ohnston Ridge Trail. " It (the tra il) provides unique op po rtunities not available elsewhere in th e area," Mu rkowski said in a prepared sta tement. "I personally th ink it mak es good sense to acco mmodate the multiple user on this trail. " The next step for the bill will be a " mar k up" session in the Sub committee. Du tchman Racing earned their third consecu tive EBC Brakes Endurance Challenge Series title at Daytona with a victory in the three-hour race. Riders Chris Haldane and newly recr uited Mike Ha rt h won easily, completing 77 laps and win ning by 9.74 seconds o ver Yamaha of j acksonville's Scott Zampach and jeff He ino in the red-flagged race. . The race was stopped just after the midway mark wh en Team Mad Dog's Dave Sado wski su ffered a massive tire failure near the start-finish lin e which sent him tu mb ling into turn one. Miracu lo usly, he was ab le to walk away wi th minor abrasio ns to his legs and back, but the bike was totally destro yed. Mad Dog had been in contention for th e tit le up to tha t point and was leading the race a t the time of the spi ll. Dutchman finished the season with 136 points, 28 better than Gold Hill Racing, I Ith in the series fina le with engine tro ub le on the last lap. Mad Dog, credi ted with a 21st place fini sh , was third in th e final standings with 107 points. In th e GTU ra nks, Team Toomer won their sixth race of the series, this time beating Orion Racin g and Team Bad Boy. Toomer had already sewn up the titl e and finished the year with 152 points to 98 for seco nd-placed Orion. Team Ameri ca GTU , fifth at Daytona, was third for the year with 76. Gl enn Barry, Michael Barnes and jon Roberts handled the rid in g cho res for Toomer wit h Robert Meist er and james Leslie riding for Orion. The Harley-Davidson Twin Sports race went to Tripp Nobles o n the Bartels' H-D en try, the Georgian crossing the line .090 seconds in front of series leader Scott Zampach of Tilley's H -D. Nigel Gale was a close third on ano ther Bartels ' bike. Going into the final race of the year, in three week's tim e in Miami, Zampach ha s a o ne-po int lead o n Nob les, 183-182. Earlier in the weekend, Zampach had won the U.S. Twin Sport race. beatin g N? bles by .460 seconds. has sin ce appeared in severa l " B" films and is currently co nt rac ted for five more. According to the Los Angeles Times, Penhall recently signed Madonna, j anet jackson, Pau la Abdul and Mariah Carey to wear Oakl ey's sunglasses. In an 88-year-old com pa ny that 's big o n hi story, Leopoldine Lapalme ma de h ist o r y h erse lf a t H a rl eyDavidson wh en she became the first woman race mechanic in th e compa ny's exis tence. Lapalme , 46, has been with Harley for 22 years . Befor e recently becom ing a mechanic in the racing dep artment, she worked in th e machi ne sho p and on the assembly line. " I don 't think i t mak es an y differen ce that I'm a woman because wom en are invo lved in all phases of mo torcycling these days," La pa lme said. " I just think it 's great th at I go t this opport u nity because I'm' such a race fan." Unfort una tely, her new job won 't get her trackside too often. Her primary jo b is to work o n the raci ng engi nes in Milw aukee. Frank Arciero, o wner of an Anaheim, Cal iforn ia-based cons truc tion com pa ny, has announced th at he will build a $30-million racing facility in so ut hern California at Mo ren o Vall ey. The 1300-acre site is loca ted approximatel y six mil es east of the old Riverside Internat ional Ra ceway, and next to DeAnza Cycle Park. Arciero had originally pl anned to build a race facil ity near Palm Springs, but city . o ffic ia ls delayed th e proj ect a n d Arciero gr ew tired of waiting. The facil ity will feature a 1.5-mil e paved oval track, a 2.25-mi le road race cours e, and a quarter-mile drag strip. On Sep tember 26, Peter Cuneen and Peter Young, po lice motorcyclists and co ns tables in the Royalty and Diplomatic Protection Department of th e Lo ndo n Metropo litan Po li ce, embarked o n a five-week, 14,000 mile ride across the U.S., with stops planned in . all 48 con tig uo us stat es. Dubbed " Bike Trek '91," the tour 's main goal is to raise mo ney fo r the Pau l O 'Gorman Fo undat ion for Chil dren witli Leu kem ia. Cuneen , 27, and Young, 29, became involved with the foundation after a fam ily mem ber of a fellow co ns ta ble was diagnosed with the disease. T he pair will raise money for the foundat ion by way of pl edges mad e in En gland as well as fundraising efforts in collabora tio n with local law en forcement agencies.
