Though they were a rch rivals on oPJ?Osing tea ms back in 1989, Wayne Ram ey a nd Edd ie Lawson ha d previously stood side by side in Marlboro colors. That was in 1984, when lawson was the tea m leader for Team Marlboro Agostini Yamaha a nd Rainey wa s in his fir st season of Grand Prix racing contesting the 250cc World Championship as part of T eam Marlboro Roberts. In 1988, Wayne Rainey fin ished third in the 500cc World Champions h ip. T he following year he had moved up to secon d in th e title ch ase, and finally, in 1990, Wayn e Rain ey wo n a well-deserve d 500cc , World Championship. Mad Dog pitted at 58 minutes to get Sadowski on th e bike , giving th e one· h our lead to Dutchman. From the first h our o n , the race wa s a bi t dull. Sad owski had put Mad Dog ba ck in front by th e halfway m ark, with only Dutchman on th e same lap in second. G o ld Hill , Yamaha of Jacksonville, O.T.S., Keystone Racin g, and T eam T oomer a ll followed in positions that would not change to th e end, except for "being bumped up a notch wh en Dutchman crashed. After the ra ce, th e Gold Hill guys, wh o averaged almost 87 mph around Texas' 12·turn, l.8-mile co u rse, were ' ecsta tic, an d Walker wa s especia lly so. He summarized th e la st la p in b ri ef detail; "Man, I was scared ! The thing started kn ocking really hard. It wanted to lock up wh enever I shut the throttle off .. . " Down in th e Mad Dog p it s, spirits were not as high . As exp lai ned by Kirk: "We should have won, we had it won , we ran out of gas . I feel we are the best team o ut there as far as riders and per sonnel., but the best tea m doesn 't al ways win." Sadowski wa s feeling better, and mused: " I raced clean for a change" and then a dded, a bi t more ser iously: " I had a sm ooth ride, just tryi n g to cut some good tim es. I ma de it dow n into the high lOs (I : 10.73 to be exact), which was not that far o ff the su pe rbike pace. I'm really happy ab out that." H e shou ld be, as th e series cha m pio nsh ip will be decided in a few week s a t Da ytona, a tr a ck w here Sado ws ki' s reputation precedes h im. Oddly en ough, Dutchma n owner Dave Schlosser wa s " glad that the cha m pions h ip is com in g down to (the final rou nd), that's th e way it shou ld be." . Indeed it will come down to th e last round, as Dutchman leads Mad Dog CN by a scant n in e points, 116·107 .
