Debbie Donnelly & The Donnelly Family Norco, CA Save Lake Sugar Tree I would like to comment on the proposed 1992 Su p ercro ss and outdoor National MX sch edule: I think the elim inatio n of the Lake Sugar Tree round is a big mistake. Virginia's Lake Sugar T ree is one of the finest m otocross tracks in the world. I realize the factories wish to reduce ex penses, but th e Lake Sugar T ree tra ck is for sal e, a n d with th e elim ina tio n of th e National. it will a lmost cert a in ly see ' th e end of an awesome track with historic value. Do yo u think a promot er will buy th e track wh en they know th e National ro u n d there has been canceled? I don't think so . Lak e Sugar Tree has hosted manyTrans-AMA and Nationals since th e ea rly ·70s. I mys elf prefer to race . m otocross and not supercross. By lo sing prestigious tra ck s lik e Lake Sugar Tree, th e future of motocross precariousl y cl oser to co mes extinction. Being 29 years of age. I still enjoy racing motocross. If tra cks like Lake Sugar Tree close down and a ll I have to ride are supercross tracks , th en I might as well get o u t of th e spo rt. Why not keep all o f the outdoo r race s and reduce th e Supercross Series by another race or tw o? T hose of you o u t th er e who agree , p lease start a p etition and sen d it to Ro y.J anson a t th e AMA . Let 's save Lake Sugar Tree. O therwi se, wh en the p roperty is sold to a de velo per, not o n ly w ill a beauti ful . track be gone but a pl ace where the early day stars raced will be gone forever. Bill Davison Charlotte, N.C. A ccord in g 10 AMA Spe cial Projects Manager Bill Boyce, altendance at th e Lake Sugar Tree National has not m et th e associat ion 's ex pectati ons and that was th e reason it was dropped from th e 1992 schedule. "(Prom oter) Gary Bailey , g ives us a good track, but he can't seem to get a big crow d," Boyce said. " W e have to p ick th e facilities that m osl people go to." Gary's wi fe, Darleen , says th ey were never invo lved in th e decision to drop th e event and that the property is indeed for sale. Th e cancelation of th e National " had a whol e lot lo do with it ," Bailey said ...Ed itor Black leather jackets If you ge t a chance _to see Black Leather J ack et on yo u r lo cal PBS sta tio n, see it ! It is a n o u tsta n ding, onehour sh ow docuinenting the rise o f th e bl ack leather jack et , from WWI to roday 's " rebe l without a clue." If yo u m issed it , request yo ur local PBS st ation to rerun it. I found it informative, witty. funn y a nd yes, oh, so true. a bo u t th e poseu rs a ro u nd. And. it includes great shots of classic British cafe bikes, th e Rock Store, Harleys and. of co urse, great looking women. Joe Hawkins Burlington, W A Good question In response to (th e letter from Ed Larosch e) " H o w much is too much?" (in th e O ctober 16 issu e): This is a good question. If o n ly someone had th e right answer. I have found th at it is impossibl e to please everyo ne and pleasing the majority is the best a body can do . The Talladega event carries th e same ticket price as all o f our events. In a n attempt to keep our racers ' costs down and still cov er th e increasing costs of organizing events in 1991, the only in creas e WERA made was going from $15 to $20 o n our gate tickets. The Talladega event was a non-promoted ye ar-end R egional Sprint a n d all racers. cr ew and guests paid th e same $20 to be present. The $20 tick et is a Saturday/Sunday tick et and on Sunday at noon the ticket price does drop $5. As to Mr. Larosche's price comparisons. I'm happy to hear that he's been able to a tten d a 'lZ Top co ncert for o n ly $19 a nd watch racing from a seat or enclosed infield, but isn 't getting up cl os e to th e action and personally meeting th e en tert a iners for a dollar more worth it?
