Hemsley heats up Las Vegas MX METZEl By Dick Goodwin LAS YEGAS. NY. SEPT. 8 Paul Hemsley dominated the 250cc Inte rme diate class a t La s Vega s Mot ocr o ss Par k, as he swep t to do uble mota wi ns . Casey McKinney was the first Int erm ediate cla ss n der throu gh th e first corner in th e com bined Pro/Intermed iate race. H em sley was mired in midpack. Gregg Cox qu ickl y work ed his way past McKinney an d int o first place, wh ile Mark Frehner moved up to th ird o n the first lap. By th e th ird lap , Hem sley had passed both McKinney and Freh ner and slid mto second, behind Cox. O n the next to- las t la p, Cox wen t do wn in th e ro llers. breakin g his fro n t bra ke. This was all th e help Hemsley needed as he sq uirted into th e lead and took the checkers by a healt hy ma rg in over Richard Antho ny. McKinney grabbed the Intermedia te clas s hol eshot aga in in mow two, with H em sley glued to hi s rear fender. With Cox and Frehn er both out with mechan ical prob lem s. the ra ce was Hemsley's to wi n. McKin ney had other ideas ho wever, a nd it look Hemsley severa l laps to finall y figh t his wa y into th e lead. When he did, he ro mped home to a big wi n over the second-place McKinney. T he first 250cc Novice class mo to sa w Dion Deni son blast to th e lead ju st ahead of Ray Bellow s and Brandon T rueb . Deni son opened up a big lead , and wh en Bellows went do wn in a . co rne r , Sco tt Morris sta rte d reeling Denison in but ran ou t o f tim e a nd had to sett le for seco nd place. With Deni son not sta rti ng rno to two , Morri s blew away the fiel d a nd wen t wire-to-wire for the mota win as Mi ch ael Bo wen fi n ish ed a dista n t second . Resu lts P/ W; I . As they cha rged up the hill fo r th e finish, Cha rdez gave it a ll he had in a last d itch effo rt. bu t the ph o to fin ish ga ve th e win to Anderson . ].J . Petchel led th e 250cc Intermedi a te cla ss, hounded by Justin McMurriek and Rob ert Carli n. Carli n cras hed in the triples and Mike Pat ern o and David Pingr ee motored past. Petch el dealt with McMu rrich, who dogged h is every move. McM urrich soared past o ver the tabletop for the lead . Then it was Pingree at Petch el's back door. Pingree found his way aro u nd o n th e last la p , a nd head ed for McMurrich . Bu t tim e had run o u t, as McMurrich cla imed th e win . In the seco nd moto , it was Petchel a nd McMurrich a t it agai n, with Pingr ee in th ird and hungry for more. Pingree put th e pressure on McMurrich. hangin g with him through th e cu rves, lookin g for an y opport u n i ty to mak e his move. At midrace, Pin gree made the pass and set after Petch el . P in gr ee was on th e move, a nd by th e sixth lap, P ingree fou nd hi s line in th e lower loop a nd shot in to the lead to take th e win, and first overall. Lawrence R inehart sto le the holeshot in th e 80ce Begi nner class, with Ni ck Bea ver. Brandon Frost a nd Wi ll Smith follow ing in tigh t form ation.
